The initiative called Zomato Safely Sealed comes in two variations to fit different sized boxes. The firm said the versatility of the packaging design allows for efficient utilisation of the space, and the transparent body allows users to check the packaging of the food.
The safety seals are made from a single material polymer and are completely reusable and recyclable. The company would also launch biodegradable versions of packaging, Zomato said in a statement.
"This packaging will be 100% tamper proof — once the food is sealed by the restaurant, the packet can only be opened by cutting off the top-end strip," it added.
“For starters, these sealed packages will come in two sizes: small and large. The large ones are capable of carrying 2-4 large boxes while the smaller ones are convenient for 1-2 food item boxes. The versatility of the packaging design allows for efficient utilization of the space,” said Mohit Gupta, CEO, food delivery, Zomato.
In the first phase, this packaging is introduced in 10 cities — Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Nagpur and Vadodara. Subsequently, it would be introduced in over 180 cities where Zomato's online ordering and food delivery services are present.
“Over three million tamper-proof packages have already been shipped to restaurants, and going by the current run rate, we will increase this figure by 3x by April, as we will introduce this packaging across 25 more cities in India,” said Gupta.
