On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2025, Kalyani Roy, director of Flexo Image Graphics (FIG), shares her journey in the print and packaging industry—one traditionally dominated by men. From early curiosity to industry leadership, Roy reflects on innovation and inspiring the next generation of women professionals

Roy’s entry into the industry was shaped by childhood curiosity. “I was fascinated by the vibrant packaging of chocolates and the colourful graphics in storybooks. It made me wonder where these glossy colours came from,” she recalls. This early intrigue evolved into a passion that eventually led her to a career in print and packaging.

Her journey at FIG has been challenging and rewarding. Initially focused on technical and operational aspects, her role has expanded to include strategic planning, innovation, and customer engagement. “I joined FIG to contribute my expertise with a touch of innovation. Over the years, I’ve taken on a larger role, ensuring that we remain ahead of market trends,” she says.

Roy strongly believes women bring unique strengths to the industry, particularly creativity and problem-solving abilities. “Women bring fresh ideas and an innate inclination for innovation. They prioritise client needs and uphold a level of dedication that drives excellence,” she explains.

While acknowledging the challenges of a male-dominated industry, she underscores the importance of resilience. “Gender-related challenges exist in every field, whether you’re a security guard or an IPS officer. The key is to demonstrate that women can perform just as well, if not better,” she asserts.

Her advice to aspiring women professionals? “Keep learning, tackle challenges head-on, and break barriers. Knowledge is your greatest asset—it drives both personal success and industry growth.”

As a leader, Roy has mastered the art of work-life balance. “The key is to give 100% to everything you do. Whether at work or with family, I am fully present. I love my professional life, but I also make time for personal passions like dancing and traveling,” she shares.

She stays motivated through continuous learning and effective planning. “Growth comes from pushing yourself and inspiring others. When you stay curious, you naturally motivate those around you,” she notes.

At the heart of FIG’s success is its strong team culture. “Our team functions like a family. There’s no rigid hierarchy—everyone is encouraged to share ideas and contribute,” Roy says. This collaborative approach fosters innovation and efficiency, ensuring FIG remains an industry leader.

Roy envisions a promising future for women in the industry. “Women are sharp, innovative, and offer fresh perspectives. As the industry evolves, there’s ample opportunity for women to make an impact,” she states confidently.

“Step out of your comfort zones. Work at every level to truly understand the industry.”

With leaders like Kalyani Roy paving the way, the future of women in print and packaging is set to redefine industry standards, break stereotypes, and drive innovation.n
