Case Study - HBD Packaging: 'We hope to take our growth to 30%'

The Greater Noida based packaging firm has set a target to achieve a turnover of Rs 100-cr by 2016. This has been facilitated by prudent investments in pre-owned kit.

Rajiv Bhargava, managing director of HBD Packaging, didn’t think twice before deciding in favour of a refurbished seven-colour Roland 707 sheetfed offset presses with online UV and coating. Along with the press that can print sheets up to 28x40 inches, an ExpertFold, folding and gluing machine, a Heiber Schroder, window patching and liner machine from Bobst, a Busch pile turner from Creed Engineers and a thermal CTP solution with a size of eight up from TechNova were also installed at the unit.

“Budget is always a constraint for a company that is in the middle of its growth phase. On the one hand, we wanted to expand the unit and increase the net production capacity and capability, and on the other hand, we didn’t want to exhaust the capital in procuring a single new press,” Bhargava explains his decision.

After procuring the arsenal of equipment, the Greater Noida-based packaging printing company also added a 23,000 sqft area to its existing facility. Bhargava adds, “Every company expands its capacity to meet its increasing demand of capability, production and delivery. We also expanded for same reasons. Post expansion, the total constructed area is around 68,000 sq/ft. With the existing facilities we have been growing at 25% CAGR but we hope to take this to 30% once the whole unit swings into action.”

Established in 1985, HBD Packaging is a family-owned business and is run by four third generation printers: Rajiv and his wife Seema Bhargava and Neeraj and his wife Ritu Bhargava.

Rajiv Bhargava, a mechanical engineer from Roorkee University (IIT Roorkee) has been a close follower of the trends in the industry, and has always been optimistic of the growth of packaging. “Packaging has to grow in India by 15-20% annually. And if the Government of India will allow the FDI in retail, the growth should touch a solid CAGR of 30%,” he says.

HBD’s facility consumes around 32 plates per day to feed its multi-colour printing presses from Mitsubishi and Planeta and converts around 800 tons of paperboard per month.  The pressroom is powered by an in-house ink kitchen from Siegwerk and a testing lab that includes GSM, calliper, COBB, gloss, scuff, bursting strength, pH, humidity, Lab and LcH colour readings through spectrophotometer, bar-code verification software for quality assurance, viscosity, ink matching and plate quality checking by X-rite IC Plate II XT.

The ISO 9001:2008 certified company, which produces folding cartons, leaflets, labels, trays, dispensers, blade wrappers and tucks, E and F – fluted cartons and POP materials has a long list of clients whom they have been serving from years. Some of them are Dabur, SC Johnson Products, Ozone Ayurvedics, Gracure Pharmaceuticals, HPL Electric and Power and Osram India. 

“We have set a target to achieve a turnover of Rs 100-cr by the year 2016. Currently, we have a turnover of Rs 45-cr and our unit works round the clock with a staff of 150,” Bhargava concludes.
