PrintWeek India received 29 entries which comprised of 116 samples for Brochure Printer of the Year 2012 Award which was bagged by Mumbai-based Parksons Graphics. Parksons Graphics secured the top spot for the four entries: New Cuffe Parade brochure for Lodha Developers; Mercedes Benz brochure for Mercedes Benz; World One brochure again for Lodha Developers; and L‘Oreal Wedding Collection brochure for Ergo India.

“The New Cuff Parade brochure is a brochure designed to highlight luxury,” commented Parksons Graphics. The luxurious brochure was accomplished with a strong focus on binding and fabrication.
Pre-press: The brochure was designed by Alok Nanda and Company for Lodha Developers. The Kodak plates used for the job were imaged on a Creo 8-up Trendsetter using Kodak’s Prinergy workflow.
Press: 500 copies of the four-colour brochure were printed on a Heidelberg CD 74-5+LX and CD 102 presses. The inner pages were 200gsm Natural Evolution with a thickness of 275 microns.
Post-press: The cover was made of 120gsm Natural Evolution paper pasted in a 2.5mm thick Kappa board. The slipcase used 160gsm Favini Cobble White paper pasted on a 2.5mm Kappa board. The post-press activities included galley making; punching the thick Kappa board; mesh fitting and thermal gloss lamination. The 275 microns thick inner pages added complexity to the sewing and binding process.
According to Parksons Graphics, the Mercedes brochure always sets the bar high. The Mercedes E-class brochure is a unique work produced with meticulous planning and supervision.
Pre-press: Designed by RK Swamy, the brochure with a run-length of 5,000 copies was output on Kodak plates through a Creo 8-up Trendsetter using Kodak’s Prinergy workflow. The artwork was composed of CMYK with special silver.
Press: The brochure was printed on 170gsm Leykem Matt paper using a Heidelberg CD 74-5+LX press. A special care was taken during printing to ensure that there was no cast especially on the images.
Also, the solid silver was easily prone to scratches making the job more challenging. The inner pages were decorated with spot UV.“The consistency of silver; the grey balance; the detailed highlights and shadows; the depth of the text on silver background are all the remarkable aspects of the quality print job,” said Parksons Graphics.
Post-press: The post-press activities included section sewing and the cover made of 250gsm Leykem matt board was over drawn.
The World One brochure designed by Alok Nanda and Company for Lodha Developers showcased luxury and opulence of the project.
Pre-press: With the run-length of 300 copies, the brochure used Kodak plates imaged on a Creo 8-up Trendsetter using Kodak’s Prinergy workflow.
Press: A Heidelberg CD-74-5+LX was used to print on the 280gsm Impressive Absolute White Card paper used inside the brochure. The aqueous coating enhances the beauty of the job.
Post-press: The major task of the job was binding the 280gsm thick substrate. The section-sewing, casing in and nipping-smashing process have been accomplished precisely to produce the complex job. The hard cover is made of 3mm thick Kappa board. The cover has grey suede material which is blind debossed. According to Parksons Graphics, the depth and consistency of the deboss is noteworthy. The suede finish is continued across the box lid.
The L’Oreal Wedding Collection brochure was a job, which included a raft of finishing process to be done to enhance its beauty.
Pre-press: The 5,000 copies of the brochure was produced for Ergo India. The Kodak plates used for the job were imaged on a Creo 8-up Trendsetter using Kodak’s Prinergy workflow.
Press: The brochure was printed on 145gsm Natural Evolution White paper using Heidelberg CD-74-5+LX and CD-102. The cover was made of 200gsm Natural Evolution White paper. The entire brochure is coated with aqueous matt varnish. The printing was done on coloured paper, with very subtle varnish adding a motif and a rich gold lettering. The sleeve is decorated with screen printing.
Post-press: The post-press activities included section sewing, hard case binding, slipcase making, punching of the Kappa board for galley and slipcase.“We spent a lot of time getting the slipcase right, which realy makes the brochure stand out from the crowd,” stated Parksons Graphics. The brochure was printed as a hardcase and a softcover. “This meant that though the binding and pagination were different, the brochure had to look identical. To achieve this across a run of over 5,000 brochures required a strong process and a good team,” added Parksons Graphics.
For all these brochures, print, sewing and binding wasn’t easy, said Parksons Graphics, adding, “These techniques, however, are not new to us.”
