Test your Packaging IQ - III

The Share A Coke campaign by Coca-Cola which was rolled out in over 80 countries has set a benchmark in package designing and marketing. But, have you ever wondered from which year did Coca-Cola start bottling its product?

In the year 1894, at a candy store in Vicksburg, Mississippi, store-owner Joseph Biedenharn began bottling Coca-Cola to sell, using a common glass bottle called a Hutchinson.

Biedenharn sent a case to Coca-Cola’s owner Asa Griggs Candler. Candler thanked him but took no action as he was more focused on fountain sales.

In the year 1899, two lawyers, Benjamin Thomas and Joseph Whitehead obtained exclusive rights to bottle Coca-Cola across most of the United States for the sum of one dollar. Another lawyer, John Lupton, soon joined their venture.

They sold bottling rights to local entrepreneurs and with their boosted efforts, by 1909, nearly 400 Coca-Cola bottling plants were into operation.
