Ahmedabad has 70 installs of web and 40 sheetfed presses

The last year-and-a-half has seen an influx of more than 70 web offset press and 40 sheetfed presses in Ahmedabad. This revelation was made by a group of top printers and members of Ahmedabad Printing Press Association (APPA), during a roundtable conference hosted by PrintWeek India in the city.

“Some five years ago, there were only five to seven web offset presses, but in the last year and a half, some 70+ new units came in with flow line machines,” said Vijay Shah, managing director of Chirag Offset, a top book, magazine and packaging printer.

Mudresh Purohit, president of the APPA, said, “The government of Gujarat made a commitment that if you have enough machinery, it could provide 25% more book work. During the course of time, print companies have bolstered their plants with web offset and post-press machinery.”

This influx has also had an affect on the overall business of a few top print companies.
“When I brought one machine a year-and-a-half ago, we were among the first ones to do so, sky was the limit then. Over a period, sheetfed operators also moved to web offset, which has distributed the work load,” said Shah.

“However, the changes in education system – move to semester system, has come as a relief, because, now there is work, but in reduced runs,” said Shah.
