Part of BMPA-PrintWeek India initiative of Seekho aur Samjho (SaS), this day-long workshop attracted more than 50 print staff from various packaging firms including SAPCO, BS Industries, Printline Reproductions….. etc.

Bobst India training manager Sunil Khodke said that this training will help bolster efficiency of the workforce and the preventive maintenance know-how will help them take good care of their machines.

The full day session in Hindi covered key aspects of die-cutters and folder-gluers and troubleshooting associated with it. The session laid emphasis on the do’s and don'ts related to them in the interest of improved productivity of the machines.

The session kick started with the queries posed by the audience with regards to faster makereadies, daily checklist before starting a machine among others.

Speaking of the maintenance of the machines, Khodke said, “For an effective performance of the machine, the concept of TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) should be followed to ensure zero breakdowns.”

Highlighting the essentials of die-cutting and folding-gluing operations, P Jawaharnath, head of services – folding cartons at Bobst said, “In die-cutting the grain direction of the substrates, the gripper margin and centerline system for dies plays a crucial role.”

“To prolong the life of die knives and to avoid angel hairs, the load balancing on the dies play a key role,” added Jawarnath. He stressed the importance of zonal patching technique for an even load on dies and hence improves the productivity.

Khodke said, “Maintenance of the machines should be diligently carried out as mentioned in the machine manual. Have a plan for daily, weekly, or monthly maintenance. Also, lubrication of the moving parts and cleaning the machine using specific chemicals is important.”

For the folder-gluer, Khodke said, “Apart from general maintenance, regular cleaning of air filters and bearing and the belt maintenance is important for the proper functioning of the machine and increase the productivity.” He said, “It is important to maintain the belt tension, as an increase in the belt tension can result in carton tearing off. Also, never mix two different types of glue.”

Finally, Anil Pimple, manager-technical service at Bobst enlisted the various accessories for the die-cutter and folder-gluers and their role in maintaining the efficiency of the machine.
