When PrintWeek India visited the site located at Sector 8 to talk to Minoo Agaraiya of JSH Packagings, he was busy in damage control. Agaraiya said the fire took place at 6.30 am on 19 June. “Since it was Sunday morning, we are expecting less loss,” said Agaraiya. He added the company is yet to calculate the exact amount of loss.
According to Agaraiya, no one noticed when the fire broke out. So the fire spread quickly before it could be controlled. “Fire and water are the biggest hazards of the corrugation industry, and unfortunately, we met one of them,” he said.
According to Sunil Kumar Singh, chief fire officer, Gautam Budh Nagar, it took around an hour to control the fire. As the factory was closed when the fire broke out, the danger to human life was avoided.
Agaraiya said following the fire, the company’s immediate concern is to focus on how to deliver material (corrugated boxes and sheets) to the clients and to streamline operations.
The ISO 9001:2008 company converts around 1,000 tonne of Kraft paper per month and produces all kind of flutes (A, B, C, E and F).
Noida-based safety expert Nidhi Niket said electricity wiring is one of the most ignored areas in a factory as far as safety is concerned. “We have observed that often factory owners purchase cheap wiring at the behest of the local electrician, without consulting a safety expert. No one studies the exact electricity circulation of a given facility, like how much is the strength of wire and how much load it can bear,” Niket said.
According to Niket, the other concerns are wiring diagram, timely checkups and replacement of old wires. “Normally people do not change the wiring until they are burst or damaged,” he added.
