Henkel announced that it will set up its largest adhesive manufacturing facility at Kurkumbh near Pune.
Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis will do the groundbreaking honours of the plant at a ceremony tomorrow (11 June), which Henkel claims will become the biggest adhesive plant in India. The plant is expected to be operational by early 2017.
The new plant with a production capacity of 80,000 tonnes is being set up at a cost of Rs 220 crore, said Henkel India's president, Jeremy Hunter during a press meet on 9 June in Mumbai.
"Spread across 25 acres of land, the first phase of the Kurkumbh operation will cover 20,000sq/m area. This investment will further support Henkel’s global strategy to increase sales and business growth in emerging markets, which contribute 44% of Henkel's global sales," added Hunter.
Henkel manufactures and supplies adhesives to industrial, packaging and consumer goods industries; automotive metal industries; and general industries, which include businesses like wind turbines, agriculture, gas refineries, etc.
Speaking about Henkel's business in India, Hunter said that the company has doubled its turnover in India in the last five years and it expects to double it in the next five years. The new investment is in line with this objective.
The Kurkumbh plant, which will be Henkel's tenth manufacturing unit in the country, will manufacture adhesives for consumer packaging and chemicals for metal pre-treatment and generate more than 500 jobs.
"As far as raw materials are concerned, 50 percent will be sourced locally while the rest will have to be imported," said Hunter.
Henkel’s plant will be LEED certified by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and will follow the Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) standards.
