As a part of the Seekho aur Samjho technical workshop series, Debraj Ganguly, a senior service engineer at Heidelberg India, covered key aspects of maintenance of an offset printing machine at the SIES Graduate School of Technology in Nerul on 5 June.
This was fifth in the workshop series.
The session gave an insight about press breakdown with reasoning and solutions to avoid or overcome a failure. Basis a survey conducted by Heidelberg, Ganguly reasoned the failure to five causes with ‘lack of cleanliness’ topping the chart followed by inadequate maintenance and knowledge of operation.
“A methodical CLRI practice: ‘Cleaning, Lubrication. Repair and Inspection’ can save you from frequent press breakdown,” stressed Ganguly. He further added, “Trust your manufacturer. Use the cleaning agent as mentioned. It is mentioned for your benefit.”
This session helped students and print supervisors learn quality maintenance. It is the most repeated, but the most important and fruitful topic.
During the seminar, Ganguly spoke about risk factors and guidelines for preventive maintenance. He quoted factual examples of best practices with pictures for deeper understanding. “Heidelberg uses colour codes as a part of preventive maintenance,” highlighted Ganguly.
The three-hour session also explained testing of pH, alcohol quality, water hardness, roller surface and other important factors.
“Bina alcohol machine chalana gunah hai,” said Ganguly highlighting the importance of alcohol in machine operation and cleaning. He also informed all printers present at the event to use only Fogra approved washing solutions.
The most interesting part was the question and answer session. The attendees were enlightened to understand the solution to the most common technical problems faced during printing, their causes and suggestions to overcome them.
“Don’t forget to apply what you learnt.” With these words Ganguly ended the session.
