During a visit to the company’s Delhi headquarters near Sarita Vihar, Pankaj Poddar, chief executive officer, Cosmo Films, and Sukriti Mendiratta, deputy manager, branding and marketing communication, offered the PrintWeek India team a breakdown of the company’s current and future plans, which includes strategic plans to capture the global market.
Cosmo Films, which started its manufacturing in 1981, with persistent growth, unique product development and strategic acquisitions, has now become a force to reckon with. The company was the first to make BOPP films meant for thermal lamination without a primer. Subsequently Cosmo designed machines for extrusion coating.
Following the acquisition of GBC’s commercial print finishing business, the company has now become the largest producer of thermal laminating films in the world, with plants and distribution centres in the US, Korea and Japan and global channel partners in more than fifty countries. It has also a strong presence in the label printing industry, whose customer-base includes industry leaders like Avery Dennison. There are also innovations like chemical coating.
Poddar said post-2012, the company is feeling confident. “In coating films, we are growing fast, at the rate of 100% every year,” he said. The company currently has two plants in Aurangabad and one each in Vadodara, the US and Korea.
In the pipeline is a plan to upgrade the US facility at the cost of $7,00,000. “We have a large portfolio, from low SIT films to matelised barrier films. We have also a big presence in the label printing industry, and in wrap around,” Poddar added. “We are the only BOPP film player which does direct thermal print coating.”
He said the company is also seeking out new markets, especially at the global level. As part of the agenda, Cosmo Films will showcase its specialty laminating film portfolio at the fifth All in Print China show, to be held in Shanghai from 14 to 17 November, 2014. The film manufacturer will also display its regular portfolio at the show, with its distribution partners from China and Hong Kong.
China is amongst the world’s largest consumer of wet, thermal and specialty thermal laminating films. “However, one of the unmet needs of customers in China has been the availability of high quality thermal laminating films, as well as specialty laminating films. This is where Cosmo Films, being the world leader in the segment, can help,” said Poddar.
The company’s specialty films comprises of soft touch velvet, linen, scuff free, silky matte and holographic films. The regular films include wet laminating films, thin/thick gloss and matte thermal laminating films.
