I visited the Orient Press plant and Zero Grafix in Silvassa.

There are more than 125 packaging printing firms and not all firms have the facility of CTP platemaking and thus Zero Grafix has an opportunity to cater to the firms who do not have in-house CTP. In the initial phase, the firm will be supplying 2,000 plates per month, which will gradually increase.

Orient Press is huge. Orient Press has reported a sales standalone turnover of Rs 44.01 crore and a net profit of Rs 0.47 crore for the quarter ended September 2013. The firm produces gravure, book printing and store division.

Saptagiri Packaging is a firm to watch out for. They are on the growth path. The plant is located on two acres area and has a Heidelberg and Bobst and a raft of machines for liner and lamination. The company converts 350 tonnes of board every month. They are radicalising their team and technology.

Param Packaging, helmed by Sanjay Patel, also the president of BMPA, is a professional unit which is equipped with QC lab, ink kitchen and a solid printing department. I was quite impressed with this unit. When I was at the unit, the team was planning to attain ISO certification in the next two months. The have invested in Kodak CTP platesetter which will arrive in two weeks time. The quality certification which they issue is the firm's USP.

Also spent time at Synergy Pack and D'Simran Cartons and Parksons Graphics. Synergy Pack is in expansion phase and will shift to new unit by February end.

The message from the Union territory is clear. The top 25 firms are deploying the latest technology and process available in the printing and packaging industry. Top players like Parksons, TCPL and Borkar boast of the the latest equipment and its personnel are trained to work on operations and maintenance of such sophisticated equipment.

Daman and Silvassa catapuled them into a premium position. This is the reason, TCPL boasts of a sales standalone turnover of Rs 97.73 crore and a net profit of Rs 2.58 crore for the quarter ended September 2013.
