Fine Art Printer of the Year: Marvel Graphic Studio, Archana Advertising
Writing in these very pages last year, we asked, “Isn’t there no firm who can stop Marvel Graphic Studio’s home run in this category?” It looks like the question remains valid, as Marvel wins the Award for a seventh consecutive year, a record unlikely to be broken soon.

The original artwork Shikara was created in 1956, a tribute to Kashmir. The watercolour effect is easily visible, with several tones of green and brown. The patches are printed. On Marvel’s part, the lines have to be in sync with the patches. The contemporary depiction of the Buddha is minimal and well-defined. Marvel’s approach towards this print is soft and area-specific. The USP of the print is oil colour effect, smooth transition of colour gradation, and scrapping and roller technique.
The gold part is the most interesting aspect of the artwork Hiranyagarbha. The USP of the job is the balance of complex lines, minute detailing and registration. It also uses the innovation of bubble print effect. The next artwork shows a family from Telangana in a fantastic narrative. Here, Marvel goes layer by layer to smoothly upgrade several tones of colours as and when required. Each of these limited edition copies are painstakingly produced over a period of 25-110 days.

Special Jury Award
Despite Marvel Graphic Studio’s expected results, this year, New Delhi-based company comes quite close to give competition — Archana Advertising, winning the Special Jury Award in the process.

Raza for Vadhera Art Gallery has a print run of 500, printed using 190gsm fine texture paper on a Mitsubishi D1000 press. It was a difficult task to achieve the accurate colours from old photographs and slides as actual paintings are not available in India and some are with private collectors. Sujata Bajaj: Ganapati for Galerie Patrice Trigano, Paris, has a print run of 1,000 copies printed on 190gsm fine texture paper on a Mitsubishi D1000 press. Printed in four colours plus aqueous coating, the job also features hot foiling on hard case.
The hot foiling on hard case is also visible on Paresh Maity: World of Colours. It has a print run of 1,000 copies that utilises 145gsm Natural Evolution paper and is printed in four colours plus aqueous coating on a Mitsubishi D1000 press.
