Bal Krishan Khindria was fondly addressed as ‘Balu’ left us on 21 November 2016. He contributed 46 years of his life to society and the printing industry. Every milestone has the stamp of his hard work and his immense pride at achieving his desired goal.
Born in Lahore in 1945, Bal Krishan completed his graduation from Delhi University. He joined a travel agency and gained valuable sales and marketing experience before joining Monotype in September 1970 as liaison and sales executive. Being a keen learner, he learnt about various processes/branches of printing industry. He never missed an opportunity to explore any avenue of getting acquainted with the latest developments. Monotype was a turning point in his life. The exposure during his 10-year stay was helpful in establishing Memory brand in the graphic arts industry.
Somewhere in the background, entrepreneurship was waiting to make its mark. The opportunity arrived in the form of a partnership in late 1970s in International Sales Enterprises, New Delhi. The products manufactured and sold under the brand Memory was the joint brainchild of visionaries DL Chadha and Bal Krishan Khindria. Their collective effort responded to the needs of the industry. The foray was made by providing solutions in the pre-press segment of offset (as letterpress by 1972s had begun to decline). The Memory brand by mid-1980s became a dependable source for catering to the changing scenario of the industry.
The verticals kept improving and new equipments were introduced at regular intervals. The constitution of the company was changed as a private limited one –Memory Repro Systems Private Limited in 1990. The infrastructure was built to match the changing demands of the market. A spacious, well-equipped manufacturing unit, spread over 45,000 sq/ft was set up in 1996 in the outskirts of Delhi at Mundka on Rohtak Road and a state-of-the-art sales and marketing office at Kirti Nagar DSIIDC Packaging Complex. The manufacturing unit is now equipped with latest CNC machines and the R&D department is working with the help of latest software – Solidworks to boost the automation process, ensure consistent quality and timely delivery.
On the social front, Bal Krishan Khindria was one of the founding members of IPAMA in 1988-89. He was also the president of Kirti Nagar Packaging Complex and Mundka Udyog Nagar Welfare Society as well as an active GC Member of Apex Chamber of Commerce & Industry. He was equally active in his residential association.
It is a great achievement for an individual, who was aspiring to be an entrepreneur, to complete his innings on such a high note. It is remarkable that without any formal training in engineering, Bal Krishan Khindria acquired all the nuances and tricks of the trade. They helped him and Chadha to set up a modern tool room and manufacturing facilities which have the capacity of meeting the demands of both domestic and overseas markets. The upcoming budding aspirants have a lot to be inspired by his life and achievements.
All facets of his life were amazing – as a head of the family, an anchor for his relatives and always ready to extend a helping hand. He was a deeply spiritual person and a devotee of Radha Soami Satsang Bias. He was an extremely disciplined person who followed a strict regime of morning walks, yoga, meditation, healthy lifestyle and diet. They helped him to build an inner strength and to become a good human being. His ready smile and friendly greetings attracted everyone – young or old.
Bal Krishan Khindria’s valuable contributions and far-sighted vision has set the roadmap for his next line of energetic team to fulfil his dream of achieving Rs 100-crore turnover. He would be missed by all. He has left a void which is not easy to fill. May God bless his soul!
