The New Delhi-based Insight Communications, which represents HP, Kodak, Xerox, Komori, Soma Engineering, Screen, Glunz & Jensen and Scheider, had earlier announced sale of three Kodak Trendsetter CTPs on day one, has further announced that it has closed 10 Komori presses orders during this month, three of which, LA437 were sealed at the show. Insight declined to name the customers.
According to Aggarwal, the new Komori LA437 was always considered a good machine. But the rising Yen and the slow market conditions were holding back the Indian printers from adopting this press. As soon as the prices became reasonable, the value is clearly visible and the recent spurt in orders is just an example of how Indian printers can quickly shift gears."
One of the customers who finalised the press, said, "We are in the era of short-run books, the order quantities are getting shorter and shorter and publishers are wanting to print as low quantities as possible to save on inventory costs, at the same time the number of titles have increased, this is forcing us to modernise ourselves from the mindset of buying old presses to super efficient fast makeready presses. And with the savings that we will achieve, our EMI burdens will become very much bearable."
Sangam Khanna, director for Komori division at Insight, added, "The savings on plates, power, ink, alcohol, blanket size and ink duct foils compared to a 40" press is a clear savings of around Rs 2.5-lakh per month. And for printers who are using 20-year old 40" presses - the added savings on paper wastage and labour savings increase the net savings to above Rs 3.5-lakhs per month. This press can do around two-lakh impressions per day if a printer wants to do long runs and it can also cross 100 sets a day with the famous fast makeready system of Komori. So not only is the press a cost saver, it also gives very high productivity."
Hashimoto of Komori Corporation is optimistic that his team, by the end of the will close 15 machines. “We are very happy with the way negotiations are progressing with so many customers for this press and we are confident of our numbers," he said.
