Kohinoor Printers boosts productivity with Zund

Mumbai-based Kohinoor Printers has invested in a new Zund S3 digital cutter. The machine has been installed at its Pondicherry facility.

The made in Switzerland, high-speed digital cutter, is capable of cutting material up to a thickness of 25mm. This is expected to boost the production at Kohinoor which is expanding its portfolio into the packaging market.
 
Angad Shetty, director at Kohinoor Printers, while speaking to PrintWeek India said, “There was a need for a digital cutter and we needed to improve our throughput whilst, developing new products for our existing customers. We wanted to pro-actively engage our end customer requirements, with the new product developments. We did look at the available options in the market and zeroed down on the Zund digital cutting table, as it offered speed, versatility and a host of modular options. This machine will indirectly support the growth of the business over a period of time.”   
 
Talking about the features that turned the scales in favour of Zund, Shetty added, “Zund has modular tooling, flexibility in expanding the machine capabilities, when required in the future, ability to handle a wide range of materials, speed, ability to work 24x7.”
 
Shetty said, “The Zund table is supporting the efforts of our sales and marketing team by producing innovative mock dummies at lesser time and cost. The earlier developments could take as long as two to three days and now we are able to turn them around within minutes. Also with this equipment, one is able to innovate with new designs, thus creating and opening up new market segments for our existing and new customers alike.”
 
According to the company, the change in press operations in the past decade has been the equipment which have become more sophisticated with focus on speed, value added options and reduction of downtime and the advantage of the new features which would support in the reduction of waste, lower downtime, increase of productivity, reduction in manpower dependency and ensuring a more consistent quality.
 
“The market has become competitive and the brands are being forced into innovating their packaging in order to stand out. Thus, the multicolour printing with special effects has become a standard. Where the job earlier was printed in two-plus colours, it is now being printed in six-plus colours. The pressure is to ensure that the equipment deployed is capable of meeting the emerging needs."
 
Kohinoor caters to the segments like pharmaceutical, food and confectionery, incenses and cosmetics, insecticides, shoes, stationery, electronic and point of purchase (POP) displays, and metallised cartons. The company has a Heidelberg Speedmaster which is capable of printing eight colours and Bobst for its finishing tasks.
 
The press specialises in full UV, matt UV, spot UV, drip off, foil and holographic stamping.
 
With a hope for further improvement in the industry, Shetty, concluded, “The overall growth in the print and packaging industry and the awareness among the working class will lead to growth. Institutes such as the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) would be a good enabler to provide, the needed skills and training.”
 
Kohinoor has seven punching lines that are capable of processing mono and fluted cartons with embossing and debossing effects and Bobst machine with the accuracy of 0.2 mm as per ISO standards. Five lines of mono cartons pasting and two lines for fluted cartons pasting and two lines for saddle stitching.
