A new launch and bookings for Prakash Offset

At its stall at the Wan-Ifra show, which concluded today, Prakash Offset displayed its new launch SG 50, a flying paster. This automatic web roll changer, according to Saurabh Gupta, will save around 90 minutes for the publishing houses.

"After a run of 15,000, the newspaper printer spends about 15 minutes for changing the reel. This includes the ramp down and ramp up time of the machine. Plus there is the wastage that it produces in order to achieve registration consistency. The SG 50 will eliminate this process."

The single-width paster has already been booked at the show, details of which will soon follow. "Rated for 50,000cph, the SG 50 is ideal for newspapers, textbook publishers, and any printer using rolls," added Gupta.

In addition to this, the Indian manufacturer who has been producing six towers each month over the past six months, has its order book full for the next quarter. The traction, according to Gupta, is in the regional newspaper printing segment. "The manufacturers have been grappling with a lull in the year 2014. The good news is, the regional newspapers and the newspaper printing houses in the tier-II and tier-III cities are investing in new machines. Opting for an India-make press is a logistically simple and economical move for them, while giving them good quality print."

However, a concern that Gupta expressed, and something that the printers need to make note of is colour consistency. "It's about time that the printers consider colour inconsistency as a wastage, too. Today, only registration inconsistency is considered as a wastage. Hence, they emphasis little on standardisation and automation of processes. A lot of inconsistency in production is operator-specific than equipment specific."

With a hope that this picture will change soon, Gupta concluded, "The Wan-Ifra show is an educative platform with key decision makers and industry personnel being present at the show. One can not expect a better show than this."
