Sandeep Zaveri, president LMAI said, “As part of its training mission, LMAI will hold regular events designed to bring together label experts in disseminating information on understanding key issues related to label converting.

In line with the mission objective, Niraj Muni of ElectroOptic analysed the malfunctioning and defects related to label die-cutting and provided troubleshooting for die-related problems in label production. Muni shared ten top tips on correct handling of a die.

Jagga underscored that the dry toner technology has a wider gamut than flexo printing, as there's no dilution of colour. Moreover, he also detailed the comparison between a la carte pricing model and click-charge model in digital segment.

Ajay Mehta of SMI Coated Products explained the components of a label stock and how the type of face coating, face stock, adhesive and liner affect the functioning of the label for different applications. Mehta said, “Even if these are the basics, it is imperative to reiterate these again and again till they become obvious and are applied mechanically.”

Touching upon the basics, Mehta provided an instance of ambient conditions in India and the necessity of storing label stock and printed labels in a controlled atmosphere both at converter’s as well as customer’s end. “As the temperature increases, the adhesive softens and wets the substrate more rapidly, and the tack and peel properties increase and shear properties reduce.
The controlled atmosphere will help with better quality in die-cutting. That is also the reason why in cold climate label bonding is poor,” adds Mehta.

In his presentation on wastages, Amit Ahuja of Faridabad-based Multitec highlighted critical areas of operation which lead to waste generation onpress and off the press. “The time wasted in searching the material, inks and correct version of a plate and due to incorrect or insufficient instructions is also a kind of wastage,” Ahuja advised converters to maintain a detailed job card for every label and systematic versioning of plates as part of SOP on the shopfloor. He also spoke about methods to save wastages in pre-register, final register and matrix stripping. “Do not match colours on the press. Use sample anilox and handheld drawdowns and match the colours offline,” advised Ahuja.
