Mahalaxmi Packaging enhances post-press operations with Bobst

Mahalaxmi Packaging, based in the Baddi Industrial Area of Himachal Pradesh, has boosted its post-press operations by installing a Bobst Novafold 110 folder-gluer equipped with an HHS gluing system, as well as a Bobst SP 102-SE die cutter at its packaging production plant (Unit 2).

Raman Agarwal, managing partner of Mahalaxmi Packaging, said, "We have found that Bobst machines are unparalleled in their respective segments. From the outset, our strategy has been to invest in top-tier equipment to ensure long-term efficiency and performance. With Bobst, we have successfully reached a production capacity of 1 million cartons per day in just 8 to 10 hours — a performance level I believe is unmatched by other machines available in the market. Our primary focus is the high-volume production of side-pasting cartons, while we also handle lock-bottom cartons, four and six-corner and other varieties on a smaller scale. In corrugation, we specialise in producing E, F, and N flute boxes, further enhancing our operational versatility.”

Agarwal highlighted the speed and quality of Bobst machines, along with their excellent after-sales service. “We've been using the equipment for six months without any issues. After studying the available options in the market for six months, we decided on Bobst because we wanted a machine that would be an asset to the company.”

Mahalaxmi Packaging's new Bobst Novafold 110 folder-gluer, equipped with an HHS gluing system and an eight-channel controller with four and six corner attachment, can glue at speeds of up to 600-m/min. The Bobst SP 102-SE die cutter, though pre-owned, was sold, supplied, and installed by Bobst India. “While a new Bobst die cutter is not part of our plans at the moment, we are considering options that align with our needs. I prefer heavy-duty die cutters, as the older machines are typically heavier and more durable.”

Raman Agarwal, managing partner of Mahalaxmi Packaging

Agarwal, who hails from Ludhiana, Punjab, started Mahalaxmi Packaging’s printing and packaging operations in 2016 by acquiring an existing unit. “At the time of acquisition, the company’s turnover was Rs 1-crore. Today, it exceeds Rs 20-crore per annum with two facilities both in Baddi. My family has a background in business, and I also worked for a USA-based MNC for over a decade.”

Chandrashekar Dhote, regional manager – sales (North and East), Bobst, added, “Raman Agarwal, a forward-thinking leader with extensive industry expertise, consistently prioritises equipping his factory with the highest quality machinery. After a comprehensive review of market options, Mr. Agarwal selected Bobst folder-gluer and die-cutting machines to enhance his production capabilities.”

He added, “We are proud to have supplied him with a fully configured Novafold 110 A2 folder-gluer, complete with a four and six-corner attachment and a corrugated kit. Additionally, we provided a Bobst SP 102 SE die-cutter, expertly refurbished at Bobst’s Switzerland facility. It’s rewarding to see both machines being utilised to their full potential, contributing to exceptional operational performance.”

The company primarily serves the pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetics industries but is now expanding into the garment and clothing sectors. “We aim to establish ourselves as a one-stop solution provider for packaging needs, and in the coming years, we plan to expand into label printing, with a focus on flexo printing.”

Currently, Mahalaxmi Packaging manufactures mono cartons and corrugated boxes, including up to seven-ply corrugated boxes. “We have a complete setup for offset printing, converting (Unit 2), and corrugation (Unit 1). Since the acquisition, we've added new equipment like a flute laminator, fingerless corrugation, Auto stitching, auto gluing and printing (pre-press and post-press) to upgrade our operations and supply the best quality products,” Agarwal said.

Agarwal sees great potential in the packaging industry, which is growing at a rate of 15-20% annually. "As brands gain importance, so does packaging. People now understand the value of high-quality printed cartons over traditional cartons. We're also doing UV and foiling work, and we're expanding our facility to meet growing demand. We are even considering another acquisition."

Currently, Mahalaxmi Packaging employs around 100 + people. While exploring the rigid box segment, they found it unfeasible due to their geographical location. “Bobst has been a reliable partner for us, and in today’s cut-throat competition, having the best machinery can make all the difference. Margins are shrinking, so increasing productivity and ensuring fast deliveries are key to maintaining profitability,” he added.
