Manipal Media Congress, a success
The Department of Printing and Media Engineering, MIT Manipal organised the 7th Manipal Media Congress last month. The two day conference was themed “Technological challenges and sustainable solutions in Print & Digital Media”. About 120 print entrepreneurs of Udupi District, Mangalore, Bangalore and teachers of printing colleges all over India delegated the conference. 32 research papers were presented by the academicians on the second day. The event was inaugurated by Dr Vinod V Thomas, the registrar (evaluation), MAHE. As the chief guest, he emphasised the need for industry-academia interaction in his address. Mohandas Bhandari, MD, School Book Company, Mangalore and Ashok Shetty, the president, Udupi District Printers Association were the Guest of Honors. Bhandari spoke about the importance of skill development among shopfloor technicians and briefed how the improvement of skill sets can boost pay and their standard of living. Shetty spoke about the facilities given to the printers by the government.
Dr Manohara Pai M, Associate Director R&C, MIT presided the inaugural session and spoke about the importance of research in the field of printing.
Various topics pertaining to the contemporary issues were delivered by print experts. Binod Kumar Mandal, GM Company Law, MTL explained the implications of GST for the print industry, Santanu Roy, GM Production, MTL Unit 5 addressed productivity enhancement techniques”, Mattar Ramesh Kini invited young entrepreneurs for startups under the topic - enterprising entrepreneurs, Dr Nandini Lakshmikantha who is the director in the School of Communications presented a talk on the influence of digital media in print”. Metal printing was explained by Srinivasmoorthy, QC Manager Massilly India Packaging. Representatives of leading print and allied product companies explained their products and process.
Praveen Patrao, Prasad Printers in Mangalore, Amith Sharma, Harper Collins in New Delhi, Thomas Manil Rego, Brilliant Printers in Bengaluru Bangalore, Prasad MTL in Manipal addressed the queries put forth by the delegates during the panel discussion session.
Dr D Srikanth Rao, Director, MIT, MAHE, was the chief guest during the Valedictory ceremony and he shed light on the need for conferences with the involvement of printing companies. Mahesh Kumar, Secretary, Udupi District Printers Association was the Guest of Honor and spoke about manpower requirements for the print industry. Dr Ramesh C, Chairman, Diamond Jubilee Celebration, MIT spoke about the activities of the Printing and Media Department and its relationship with the media industry. The vote of thanks was given by Dr Amrutharaj H Krishnan, HOD of Printing Department, MIT.
