Mehul Desai’s master stroke at Masterclass
The topic of discussion at the sixth Masterclass at SIES in Navi Mumbai was ‘careers in printing industry’. Mail Order Solutions’ Mehul Desai, a self made entrepreneur, shared his success graph from being a sales professional in early days of his career to a print CEO heading Rs 120-crore business today.

In conversation with PrintWeek India’s Ramu Ramanathan, Desai spoke about his stints at P&G, Xerox and Corporate Couriers as sales professional. He spoke about how he saw an opportunity in the printing industry when, during an interaction with one of his USA-based clients, he realised that getting printing done in India is 50% cheaper than that in the USA.
Desai is very optimistic about the printing industry. Desai’s gurumantra: Choose your area of interest and become a specialist. Highlighting the job profiles at MOS, Desai said, “When you join a shopfloor, you learn technical things and as you learn you grow up the chain to become a shopfloor manager and even up the heirarchy. Similarly, when you join as an estimator, there are opportunities to become business development manager and so on.”
Desai highlighted several areas of specialisation in the printing industry. He made an important point. “There are many different sectors, which reserve heavy budgets for print. They require a print expert to make crucial decisions to procure print products. This includes FMCG, pharma, banking and several other sectors,” added Desai.
On technological front, Desai enlightened 120 students about variable data printing and significance of data. He spoke about various types of direct mail jobs produced at MOS with the combination of offset and digital technology.
