Soon after hosting an awareness camp on aspects of printing and packaging for the local rural unemployed youth, Offset Printers Association (OPA) launched its planned Print Media Ashram on 3 May, 2015 at the Police Public School in Bharowal Kalan, 31kms away from Ludhiana.
Skilled training in eight different streams of printing and packaging will be provided free of cost to the interested youth near or within their reach to their home.
The training at the OPA’s Print Media Ashram will also guarantee service to the trained personnel, which will fetch up to Rs 15,000 per month. For this the trainees will have to complete 120 hours of the said course it takes up. OPA has enrolled 31 youth (21 women and 12 men) for the course.
Kamal Chopra, general secretary OPA, said, there is need to evolve a new frame work for skill development for the informal sector. “We are encouraging the youth to get training for this profession which has many skills such as pre-press, DTP, screen printing, post-press, binding, machine operator, etc. A student can get training in any of these modular employable skills (MES).”
The concept of MES is identification of minimum skill set which is sufficient to get an employment in the open market. It will allow for skill up-gradation, multi-skilling, multi entry and exit, vertical mobility and lifelong learning opportunities in a flexible manner.
Chopra added, “The flexible delivery mechanism is the good part of the training programme. Trainees can complete the course as part-time, week-end or full-time trainees.”
Complimenting the project, Harjinder Singh, general secretary of Lucknow Printers Association, said, “This certainly is a big initiative. It will revolutise the printing industry and on the other hand it will help in securing the print industry in much safer hands.”
