Athang Jain, director, Jain Farm Fresh Foods, said, “With these products, we intend to change the paradigm by making seasonal fruits available in frozen form all around the year. Strawberry and Jamun pulp, along with AamRus new packs, is an extension of our company’s ethos of quality and innovation by keeping them free of any preservatives, added flavor or colour.”

Keeping the products free of any preservatives means the responsibility of enhancing the shelf life of the product lies with packaging.

Jain said “Packaging takes a whole new level of importance when the aim is to keep the product as natural as it is available in nature. We process fruits for their pulp and aim is to deliver it untouched by any preservatives and chemicals as well as any flavour or colour.”

In order to achieve the objective, the pulp products are maintained in cold temperature conditions of -18 degree Celsius throughout the supply chain. “We knew that our bucket has to be sturdy and strong to stand frozen state as well as be leak- or tamper-proof to not allow contact with the elements until opened, as there are no preservatives. So packaging was one of the key aspects we explored when conceptualising the product.”

The packaging for Jain’s products AamRus, Strawberry and Jamun pulp is a food-grade plastic bucket with handle and temper evident seal. It is reusable and recyclable and can withstand frozen temperature. Also, the bucket has in-mould label with glossy orange peel-effect finish.

When kept under -18 degree Celsius, the products deliver a shelf life of two years. “Packaging effectively influences or changes the way your product can be handled or stored in adverse situations in a bid to maintain its shelf-life. Once opened the contents have to be consumed in three days,” added Jain.

Talking about the importance of packaging in frozen food segment, Jain, said, “Packaging plays a very crucial role for protecting the frozen food from the time it leaves the processing unit to its transportation and distribution to the retailer, and finally to the consumer’s refrigerator. Frozen food manufacturers must adhere to packaging and labelling norms, conform to the Weights and Measures Act, and follow microbiological standards, food safety management systems, fire safety and pest control requirements at the factory.”

Sunil Deshpande, managing director, Jain Farm Fresh Foods, said, “This is the start of a complete new category of food products whose production we have pioneered in the country, with frozen fruit pulps being the initial offering and more innovative products to follow soon. We aim to create a market utilising our local produce acquired from our indigenous farmers thereby contributing to agrarian economy and aligning with our founder’s principle of welfare for farmers as our organisation’s primary duty.”
