Mihir Joshi looks at the biggest public limited packaging firms in India and finds the latest trends that emerge from financial figures of the top 21 packaging firms.

Bilcare
Bilcare, a packaging solutions provider for the pharmaceutical industry, is a research oriented firm which has filed for over 167 patents worldwide and are at various stages of granting, 34 of which have already been granted.
Bilcare has manufacturing facilities in nine different locations with five dedicated R&D centres spread across in Europe, USA and Asia, and serve their customers in over 50 countries with wide range of products and services.
Bilcare reported consolidated sales turnover of Rs 737.96-crore and a net loss of Rs 19.33-crore for the quarter ended March 2014. Bilcare share has given 58.44% returns over the last six months and 11.21% over the last 12 months.
Polyplex Corporation
Polyplex Corporation is among the world's largest manufacturers of thin PET/ Bottle Grade Pet Resin film. Their global presence is in 78 countries across Europe, Americas, Indian sub-continent, Far East, Asia Pacific and the Middle East, catering to 1300+ customers.
They run integrated manufacturing operations from India, Thailand, Turkey and U.S.A. with distribution operations in U.S.A., China, Turkey and Netherlands.
Polyplex Corporation has reported 58% year-on-year growth in consolidated net profit at Rs 62.26-crore for the first quarter ended June 2014.
The company’s net profit was Rs 39.31-crore in the corresponding quarter of previous fiscal year. Net sales too, grew 56%, and stood at Rs 666-crore.
Jindal Poly Films
Jindal Poly Films is part of Rs 30 billion, Jindal Group. From being only a polyester yarn producer in 1985, JPFL diversified in 1996 into BOPET film production. In 2003, JPFL commenced production of BOPP film and metallised film. It further consolidated with the acquisition of France-based Rexor, which produces metallised and coated films as well as tear tape, stamping foil, security thread and other high-value products.
Jindal Poly Films' plant at Nasik is the world’s largest single location plant for the manufacturing of BOPET and BOPP films.
Jindal Poly Films reported a 10 times increase in its quarter one profits of fiscal year 2015. Their net profit was at Rs 39-crore compared to Rs 3.8-crore in the same quarter of the last fiscal year. The company’s net sales increased to Rs 666.7-crore against Rs 650.2-crore.
Hindusthan National Glass and Industries
Hindusthan National Glass started operations in 1946 following the commissioning of India’s first fully automated glass manufacturing plant at Rishra (near Kolkata). At present, it is the key player in India’s container glass industry with a pan India presence and its plants located at Rishra, Bahadurgarh, Rishikesh, Neemrana, Nashik and Puducherry.
Apart from being the undisputed leaders in glass container solution provider in India, HNG also carters to customers in 23 different countries.
Hindusthan National Glass and Industries have reported a net loss of Rs 63.19-crore for the quarter ended March 2014. Sales declined 4.21% to Rs 476.06-crore in the quarter ended March 2014 as against Rs 496.96-crore during the quarter ended March 2013
Essel Propack
Essel Propack is a part of the Essel Group. Essel Propack functions through 24 state-of-the-art facilities in 12 countries, selling more than five billion tubes. With a market share of 33% in the laminated tubes domain, Essel Propack is the world’s largest manufacturer with units operating across countries such as USA, Mexico, Colombia, United Kingdom, Poland, Germany, Egypt, Russia, China, Philippines, Indonesia and India.
Essel Propack reported a 34.05% increase in its consolidated net profit at Rs 38.46-crore for the second quarter ended September 2014. The company had posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 28.69-crore in the corresponding period last year.
Total consolidated income from operations during July-September quarter also increased by 13.13% to Rs 595.15-crore from Rs 526.07-crore. For the first half of 2014-15 fiscal, the company's consolidated net profit has raised by 24.24% to Rs 64.83-crore as against Rs 52.18-crore in the corresponding period.
Piramal Glass
Piramal Glass (formerly known as Gujarat Glass) is a glass packaging company providing packaging for Pharmaceutical and Perfume Industry. Prior to acquisition in 1984 by the Piramal Group, the company located its manufacturing plant in Kosamba, Gujarat. Piramal Glass offers solutions like full bottle design capabilities, in-house mould design, CNC machines for mould manufacturing, glass manufacturing and dedicated ancillaries for decoration and accessories like caps, cartons and brushes.
Piramal Glass has its manufacturing facilities in India (Kosamba and Jambusar), Sri Lanka and USA.
Piramal Glass has reported a net loss of Rs 6.80-crore for the quarter ended March 2014 as against net loss of Rs 3.40-crore during the quarter ended March 2013. Sales figures rose by 4.81% to Rs 276.96-crore in the quarter ended March 2014 as against Rs 264.26-crore during the quarter ended March 2013.
Cosmo Films
Cosmo Films, manufacturer and supplier of packaging, label, specialty films and print lamination has a customer base which is spread across more than 100 countries in six continents. The company started their first production facility in 1981 at Aurangabad and has gradually expanded to become one of the leaders in BOPP films manufacturing. It acquired Gujarat Propack and 2002 and set up a manufacturing plant in South Korea in 2011.
Cosmo Films has reported a consolidated total income from operations of Rs 450.66-crore and a net profit of Rs 4.44-crore for the quarter ended September 2014.
Cosmo Films share has given returns of 122.59% over the last six months and 130.93% over the last 12 months.
Flexituff International
Flexituff International with its 5000 strong workforce and fully integrated plants are manufacturers of flexible intermediate bulk container (FIBC). Flexituff manufactures a wide range of FIBCs in the world thanks to their in-house design and development team. Over 90% of their revenues are generated from global sales.
Flexituff International has reported a consolidated total income from operations of Rs 290.50-crore and a net profit of Rs 1.01-crore for the quarter ended September 2014.
Flexituff and has given 7.36% returns over the last six months and -0.52% over the last 12 months.
Huhtamaki Paper Products
Paper Products offers a wide portfolio of packaging solutions that include flexible packaging, labelling technologies and specialised cartons. And all this supported by the packaging machine division to provide the customer with total packaging solutions. With three fully integrated manufacturing facilities at Thane, Silvassa and Hyderabad.
In 1999, Paper Products became a member of the Huhtamaki Packaging Worldwide, a global leader in consumer packaging.
Huhtamaki Paper Products has reported a consolidated total income from operations of Rs 314.35-crore and a net profit of Rs 13.22-crore for the quarter ended September 2014.
Garware Polyester
Garware Polyester founded in 1957, developed in-house technology for polyester films in India and built its first state-of-the-art plant to manufacture polyester films 1976 in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Garware Polyester has four manufacturing plants for polyester film and manufactures film of thickness ranging from 10micron to 350micron. The company possesses patented technology for dyed polyester film in India and USA.
Garware Polyester net profit declined 76.46% to Rs 5.52-crore in the quarter ended March 2014 as against Rs 23.45-crore during quarter ended March 2013. Sales also declined by 7.96% to Rs 187.10-crore in the quarter ended March 2014 as against Rs 203.29-crore in March 2013.
Tinplate
Tinplate Company of India is the largest indigenous producer of tin coated and tin free steel sheets in India. The company exports about 20-25% of its production directly to end-users (can-makers) and its products are well accepted in the markets of South East Asia, Middle East and some developed countries in Europe. Headquartered in Kolkata, the company’s manufacturing plant is located at Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. There are presently 11 offices in India and a distribution network with 16 stocking points.
Tinplate Company of India has reported a standalone total income from operations of Rs 252.13-crore and a net profit of Rs 14.66-crore for the quarter ended September 2014. Other income for the quarter was Rs 1.96-crore.
Ester Industries
Ester Industries, established in 1985, is a leading manufacturer and supplier of polyester films and engineering plastic compounds. Ester’s corporate headquarter is located in Gurgaon, Haryana while Ester’s manufacturing facility is located at Khatima, in the state of Uttarakhand.
Net profit of Ester Industries declined 82.60% to Rs 0.91-crore in the quarter ended September 2014 as against Rs 5.23-crore during the previous quarter ended September 2013. Sales declined 4.14% to Rs 239.02-crore in the quarter ended September 2014 as against Rs 249.34-crore during the previous quarter ended September 2013.
Ess Dee Aluminium
Ess Dee Aluminium consists of the parent company, Division India Foils and its 100% subsidiary, Flex Art Foils. Ess Dee was the first company in India to manufacture dedicated high-end pharmaceutical packaging products like cold form blister and child-resistant-blister packaging. In December 2011, Ess Dee opened a wholly-owned subsidiary in Singapore.
Ess Dee Aluminium has reported a consolidated total income from operations of Rs 225.12-crore and a net profit of Rs 14.10-crore for the quarter ended September 2014.
Karur KCP Packkagings
Started in 1961 by KC Palanisamy, Karur KCP Packkagings has, over the last 40 years, grown into multi-dimensional and multi-product group. The Tamil Nadu-based company supplies packaging material to major Indian cement industries and also exports its products to USA, Europe and SAARC countries.
Karur KCP Packkagings experienced a steep drop in standalone net profit for the quarter ended September 2014. During the quarter, the profit of the company declined 33.33% to Rs 86 lakh from Rs 1.29-crore in the same quarter last year.
Net sales for the quarter rose 14.24% to Rs 144.48-crore, compared with Rs 126.5-crore for the prior year period.
Everest Kanto Cylinder
Established in 1978, Everest Kanto Cylinder has become one of the pioneers in the development and production of industrial and CNG cylinders with well over 1.5 million high pressure gas cylinders and 6,00,000 CNG cylinders in service and three manufacturing plants in Aurangabad, Tarapur and Gandhidham in India and one each in China, USA, Germany and Middle East (Dubai).
Everest Kanto Cylinder has reported a consolidated total income from operations of Rs 100.66-crore and a net loss of Rs 29.62-crore for the quarter ended June 2014.
Neo Corp International
Neo Corp International, since its inception in 1986, is dedicated in making tailor designed products under Packtech. NCIL reached the status of a fore-runner internationally as a reliable supplier of Packtech products. Neo Corp also has a star export house status recognised by the Government of India in view of the company's excellent export performance. It has global presence which pans across five continents and 19 countries.
Neo Corp International has reported a consolidated sales turnover of Rs 369.01-crore and a net profit of Rs 3.14-crore for the quarter ended March 2014.
Hitech Plast
Hitech Plast is a leading rigid plastic packaging manufacturer – a business to business company. They are engaged in the manufacture and sale of innovative polymer products to industries like paint, personal care, agro chemicals, health care, confectionary, lube and retail household products. The Mumbai-based company has 13 manufacturing plants across the country with a research and development centre in Pune.
Hitech Plast has reported a consolidated total income from operations of Rs 136.92-crore and a net profit of Rs 2.47-crore for the quarter ended September 2014.
Manjushree Technopack
Founded in 1977, Manjushree Technopack started as a small umbrella manufacturing unit in Guwahati, Assam and thereafter in 1984 forayed into manufacturing of flexible plastic packaging. After raising funds for its PET bottle manufacturing unit in Bengaluru, through an IPO in 1995. Today, it is the largest converter of PET and preforms in India with an installed capacity of 30,000 MTPA and caters to the packaging needs of a large section of the FMCG fraternity. Besides PET, Manjushree also manufactures oxygen barrier retortable multilayer and stretch blow moulded bottles - both of which were brought into India for the first time by Manjushree.
Manjushree Technopack’s net profit declined 34.09% to Rs 1.72-crore on 25.78% growth in net sales to Rs 104.77-crore in the second quarter ended September 2014 over the corresponding figures from September 2013.
TCPL Packaging
TCPL Packaging, (formerly known as Twenty-First Century Printers) is one of India's largest manufacturers of printed folding cartons. TCPL Packaging operates out of its six manufacturing units; three in Silvassa; two in Haridwar; and one in Goa.
TCPL is one of the largest exporters of printed cartons from India. It regularly caters to consumers in countries like UK, Netherlands, UAE, Bangladesh etc. Exports constitute about 22% of TCPL's annual revenues.
TCPL Packaging has reported standalone total income of Rs 124.07-crore and a net profit of Rs 8.22-crore for the quarter ended September 2014. Other income for the quarter was Rs 1.46-crore.
TCPL share has given returns of 358.19% over the last six months and 540.82% over the last year.
