To mark the achievement, the Plastindia Foundation team hosted a press conference on 5 January 2018, at the Goregaon Sports Club in Mumbai.
Addressing the press conference, Atul Kanuga, chairman of the environment and plastic image committee, Plastindia Foundation, said, “The t-shirt project of the scale is to draw attention to the endless uses of plastic. Upcycling from the waste is the new mantra and we as a plastic industry will play our part."
During the event, Swapnil Dangirikar, the official adjudicator of Guinness World Records confirmed that the t-shirt is bigger than the current record holder T-Shirt which is 93.2metres height x 62.73 metres width. The fabric from this t-shirt will be later used to create 10,000 T-Shirts and distributed free among the children from economically weaker sections.
KK Seksaria, president, Plastindia Foundation, said, “The thought behind this initiative is to draw citizens’ attention on facts such as the dire need for everyone among us to be more responsible towards the environment. Plastics waste can be managed effectively with understanding segregation at source and make citizens more conscious towards littering and mixing waste.”
Sharing the industry’s point of view, Vimal Kedia, managing director of Manjushree Technopack said, "Plastic has indeed made the world a better place. And it is the responsibility of all stakeholders, including consumers to contribute towards responsible use and recycling of plastics."
Rohit Parmar, managing director, Sushila Parmar International, said, “The world’s largest t-shirt made from 100% recycled plastic waste’ makes a statement in itself. It tells the world that if the plastic is used, segregated, disposed and then further, re-cycled correctly, then it can do more good to the world than any harm. We at Parmar believe plastics are a blessing and like every blessing, we must know how to use it carefully and appropriately.”
Among those witnessing this record creation was Afroz Shah, the crusader behind the world’s biggest beach cleaning exercise at Versova beach in Mumbai. Shah applauded the initiative and urged the citizens to take up various environmental causes and make it their personal journey. “Only then, the world will be a better place to live in.”
