PrintPack 2025: Erhardt+Leimer unveils automatic butt splicer-unwinder
Erhardt+Leimer (E+L) made its return to PrintPack India after a 15-year hiatus, launching its automatic butt splicer-unwinder and turret rewinder with a slitting option. These systems are designed for label and narrow-web printing machines, enhancing productivity and efficiency. The automatic butt splicer-unwinder allows operators to load rolls up to 700 mm in diameter without lifting equipment, using a load and lift slide system. Additionally, the system features automatic web alignment, ensuring consistent operation.

The turret rewinder, designed for high precision and speed, is equipped with advanced tension control systems to handle materials such as laminates, paper, and label stock. These systems help to prevent material damage and optimise production efficiency.
ID Singh, managing director of E+L India said, “These are primarily used in label printing and narrow web printing machines. We’ve already sold two to three units in the market, and this is the first public appearance of the product.
In addition to the splicer-unwinder and turret rewinder, E+L showcased other technologies, including the Smartscan MIS2 for print image inspection and the ELGuider DRB11 and DRB23 pivoting frame systems. Singh highlighted E+L’s web monitoring system, the ELScan OMS5, which uses dual 18-megapixel sensors and a motorised crossbeam with high-speed control for excellent image quality.
These systems, designed for label printing machines, are already proving successful in the market. One of the first customers, Albea Betts, has placed a repeat order, while Skypack has also invested in the technology.
The non-stop unwind and rewind system is designed for standard 450-mm label printing machines and can handle speeds up to 110 metres per minute, significantly improving productivity. “The main benefits include saving material costs, energy, and manpower,” Singh noted. The system eliminates downtime during roll changes, reduces material waste, and cuts down on the need for additional manpower, especially for night shifts.
Manufactured at E+L’s Ahmedabad plant, the system has a lead time of four to five months, with installation typically completed in just two to three days after testing.
Looking ahead to 2025, Singh shared that E+L aims to strengthen its presence in the packaging industry, particularly in narrow-web printing. “We’re competing with major suppliers and introducing new products such as a narrow-web guide and a corona treater,” he added. Additionally, E+L plans to expand its footprint in the textile industry, which has seen substantial growth in India due to localised manufacturing.
