PrintWeek Awards 2024: Replika Press wins Book Printer of the Year (Specialty & Trade) (Joint Winner)

A frequent victor in the book categories at the PrintWeek Awards, there is nothing that can be said about Replika Press that hasn’t been said already. The company’s samples this year highlight how a master printer can turn a regular trade book into a collector’s item.

The Hobbit for HarperCollins highlighted Replika’s ability to handle four-colour jobs in which artwork reproduction is of utmost importance — especially because there are copyright issues involved. 3,500 copies of this version were printed on a Heidelberg Speedmaster. The dusk jacket included foiling and embossing.

Wicked for HarperCollins, a black book that featured three different foils — green, red, and gold — involved several operations. Replika printed 75,000 copies of the 416-page book on a Heidelberg press. Post-press processes included UV inks on the case along with a green-coloured edge, to match the foil on the cover.

Bridgerton for HarperCollins also featured coloured edges. The hardbound cover had foiling and embossing. 35,000 copies of the 768-page book were printed on 100-gsm Wesco Classic paper.

10,000 copies of The Odyssey for Union Square, were printed on 90-gsm Chenming Snow Eagle matte art paper on a Heidelberg press. This version of the book was 320 pages long. Post-press processes included section-sewn hardcase on a three-mm board with a round back, foiling, embossing, and gilded edges.
