PrintWeek Awards 2024: Thomson Press (India) wins Book Printer of the Year (Education) (Joint Winner)

If you open a book in a store, chances are that it was printed by Thomson Press (India). That is the reach and visibility of the Faridabad-based company, established more than half a century ago in 1967.

Thomson Press: Making ink on paper come alive

The Holy Qur’an impressed the Jury the most. This version of the text was in a box, whose top could be converted into a book rest, known in Islam as the Rehal. Properly reading the Holy Qur’an includes resting the book on a Rehal. A perfect example of utility presented as value addition, the job involved die-cutting and post-press embellishments, such as gold foil, spot UV, round spine, and thermal gloss lamination. 4,000 such pieces were made.

Huang’s Catheter Ablation of Cardiac Arrhythmias, for Elsevier Health, had a print run of 1,016-copies. The 828-page book was bound in a German case-making machine that specialises in heavy medical books. The book blocks were sewn with thread imported from Spain, matching the colour of the paper. The book’s hinge has a three-mm depth to add to its beauty.

Four samples of Penguin Select Classics for Penguin Random House had a print run of 2,015-copies each. The books featured hardcover binding with a round spine. The finishing included grinding on the cover to give it a textured finish and a glossy effect on the cover image. The books also featured coloured edges, which were the same shade as the cover.

The Building Reading Success module set for Sadlier School, with a run of 500 copies, came with a three-ply corrugated slipcase that had 25-micron lamination for durability. It had extra flute fillers inside to protect the set of spiral-bound books.
