MACROMEDIA DIGITAL IMAGING is the Point-Of-Purchase Printer of the Year
Macromedia Digital Imaging: masterful compositions of other worldly fascades
More than any other entry in this year’s Point-of-Purchase Printer of the Year Award category, Hyderabad-based Macromedia Digital Imaging, according to the judges used its resources sensibly, which is essential for capturing compelling standees for its Vodafone and movie clients. Macromedia created multi-layer designs from a flat layout/design with the HP FB 6100 using UV curable inks. It deployed the HP Artios CAD software for design and to demonstrate the 3-D view of what the products would look like, to the client. The company also employed EskoArtworks’ Kongsberg table for contour cutting to produce the standees. One judge commented that it’s a brilliant standee. Above all "it is practical and commonsensical, plus good to look at."

PARKSONS GRAPHICS is the Social Stationery Printer of the Year
Parksons Graphics: is print boring? ... Not with these prime pickings
The clear winner in this category, Parksons Graphics produced some superb and remarkable stationery items, which were "fresh, had engaging designs and pleasing imagery". The judges loved the Kalpataru Desk Calendar and the Roff Planner. The 13-leaf calendar with a flyleaf and envelope strictly followed the client’s instruction – use special effects solely for enhancement and not for inteference of the design. While reviewing Parkson’s samples, a judge said: "Such jobs are indicative of a printer’s role. Print is not merely reproduction. It is geared towards exploring ideas, techniques and design collaborations." Kodak plates outputted on a Creo 8-up Trendsetter and powered by Prinergy workflow through a Heidelberg CD 74-5 LX four-colour press, produced these samples for Parksons.

The entries in this category included print displays produced on 60-inch wide-format printers and after reviewing all the entries, the judges voted for the print samples submitted by Bhopal-based Color Photo Print. This wide-format printer’s Simla sample gave interesting scenery a painterly look, while the Taj Mahal sample had to preserve the input image’s detailed features on the white marbles. According to the printers, this required proper treatment; multiple test strips were printed with different curves and applied for best highlight preservation. The prints were fired on an HP Designjet Z6100 eight-colour using HP Vivera Ink and Everyday glossy photo paper and self-adhesive substrate. The judges appreciated the significant effort the company had made to achieve the desired result.
