Jak Printers: the power and glory of books

As in the inaugural edition, Mumbai-based Jak Printers was declared winner – once again – of the PrintWeek India Award trophy. This was one of the strong groups with some high-quality entries. The winning entry had books like Narigandhi, Hampi – A story in stone and Dharavi which displayed quality throughout, right from paying attention to design, use of photographs and imagery to consistency in print. The hardcase bound book Narigandhi had an art house feel about it. As one of the judges remarked "it made me want to read the book!". The entries from Jak were printed on a Heidelberg Speedmaster 102S, six-colour press using Gardapat 13 Kiara, Arctic Volume Mass, Sinarmas Royal Matt Art Paper (for jacket). Prinect workflow drove the Suprasetter platesetter.

Pragati Offset: building a brand with specialised techniques

Pragati Offset, this year’s PrintWeek India Brochure Printer of the Year prides itself on the infrastructure it deploys while producing products. And it knows how to use technology to make brochures stand out from the stack. All the four printed samples had unusual graphic effects that capture the project’s spirit. "The brochures were eye-catching, but the Tanishq – the Wedding Jeweller brochure "almost leaps out," said a judge. Besides the Tanishq brochure, the Tresorie at the Park Hyderabad brochure also stood out for its striking die-cutting on the cover. The brochure was printed using CMYK plus two metallic colours. Judges loved the "multiple crossover images and blind spot UV designs" crossing over from one page to another. This positioned the printed brochure as something very special.

Silverpoint Press:  where magazines are a serious business

Silverpoint Press was the unanimous winner in this category. "A catalogue that’s on top of the design trends. We loved the terrific mix of photographgy and the clever silver edge guilding administered in the entire Decadein Design catalogue," said a judge. To meet the client’s demand, Silverpoint silver laminated the cover with single-colour white printing. Die-cut orange sponge was pasted on the case cover. All the pages were aqua coated with two special colour printing to achieve the silver edge effect. The client, Design Temple was said to be delighted with the outcome. Other Silverpoint clients include organisations in the hospitality industry like the Indian Hotels Company, for which it produces social stationery and brochures, besides catalogues.
