Prof Matche, with his extensive experience, expressed a continual passion for learning and improving within the field, highlighting that the journey of innovation in packaging technologies is far from over.

Prof Matche emphasised the critical need for genuine, deep-seated collaborations between industry stakeholders and academic institutions. He critiqued the often superficial nature of these partnerships, which tend to be motivated by immediate needs rather than a sustained commitment to solving core industry challenges.

He pointed out the tendency in academic settings to avoid risk by sticking to conventional research paths that offer comfort and predictability. Prof Matche encouraged researchers to venture beyond these boundaries, tackling real-world problems that could lead to innovative solutions and more meaningful engagement with industry problems.

During his talk, Prof Matche explored the evolution of smart and active packaging technologies that do more than just contain and protect food. These technologies enhance food preservation through interactive components within the packaging that respond to environmental changes, thereby extending shelf life and improving safety.

He shared several case studies where applying these advanced packaging solutions led to significant patents and breakthrough research findings, effectively addressing specific industry needs. These examples served as a testament to the potential benefits of research that closely aligns with industry demands.

Prof Matche highlighted the ongoing challenges in the packaging sector, particularly the push for solutions that are both environmentally friendly and economically viable. He advocated for a forward-thinking approach that anticipates the future needs of the industry and develops sustainable technologies that can adapt to changing market dynamics.

Prof Matche's presentation was not just an overview of current trends but a call to innovate and collaboratively push the boundaries of what's possible in food packaging to meet the complex demands of tomorrow's markets. His insights underscored the significant role that smart packaging will increasingly play in the sustainability and safety of food products worldwide.
