This session is part of a build-up to BMPA's diamond jubilee celebrations in 2015.
The eleven mantras that we gleaned from Prof Moridian's session‘Profiting through Productivity’ were:
Mantra 1: Invest the most expensive kit in your most critical bottleneck.
Mantra 2: Know thy costs. Know what is your daily operation expense.
Mantra 3: Toyota did not design its plant based on Vastu - and sit onthe revenue of $10 bn. Moradian says have belief in yourself. The Parksons Packaging team shared a live example of how they tweaked their plant shopfloor based on best practise in manufacturing.
Mantra 4: Get out of your mind that you are in a industry which is unique and complex. The main principles are common to most industries.
Mantra 5: Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) should be protected. And constantly improved.
Mantra 6: Don't buy the latest technology. Please buy proven technology. Even it means investing in a pre-owned press.
Mantra 7: Depreciation does not take a break for lunch Nor does bank interest on loans. So don't unnecessarily add a capital asset.
Mantra 8: Remember: The top 500 companies in India on the Stock Exchange operate at an 11% average. For a printer to be successful: an aspiration of 35-40% is a must.
Mantra 9: Start measurement. Then analyse. Then act upon it. Then fix it.
Mantra 10: A company like Essel Propack became number one because of on time delivery.
Mantra 11: The faster you deliver, the better for bottomlines.
Using real-time examples from Essel Propack, Garware Polyester and Garware Industries, Prof Boman Moradian told Mumbai's top printers where the extra 20% will come from.
Boman Moradian is a mechanical engineer having graduated from VJTI, Mumbai. He holds a post-graduate degree in management studies in Operations from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies. During the full day session, Moradian shared his experience with case studies from his 32-year career at Bharat Bijlee, Ambalal Sarabhai Enterprises, Decom Marketing and Shilpi Advertising.
Two takeaways from the session:
Prof Moradian recommended two must reads for the print fratenrity.
The Goal by Eliyahu M Goldratt, Geff Cox and David Whitford
The Business of Paradigm by Joel Barker
Meanwhile printer members and associate members from the Bombay Master Printers Association will converge at Rangasharda auditorium in Bandra on 21 June, 2014 to watch a play in Hindi, organised to celebrate BMPA’s Diamond Jubilee year.
BMPA will be completing 60 years of its existence, and as part of its year-long celebration will host Ravan Leela, a riot of laughter, written by Dr Kusum Kumar; and designed and directed by Om Katare of Yatri fame. The play is presently in the 35th year of its production.
“BMPA has planned to host a series of events to mark its 60-year journey,” said Faheem Agboatwala, vice president of BMPA. “Over the last six decades, BMPA has been a constant source of information to the print industry in Mumbai and the 60th anniversary events will be a time when we hope that our members will participate, enjoy as well as educate themselves.” He went on to add, “Although many things have changed over the years, BMPA has always been there for its members, every time.”
