Headquartered in the US, QuadTech, world’s leading innovator of advanced colour and inspection technology for the printing industry, has surpassed the milestone of building its 15,000th MultiCam, the world’s best-selling register camera.
MultiCam is the LED camera technology at the heart of both the company’s Register Guidance System, for controlling colour-to-colour register; and the Ribbon Control System, which controls print-to-cut accuracy.
“No other register camera comes close to achieving this level of market acceptance,” said Hemant Desai, QuadTech general manager for India. “Printers are facing ever-increasing competitive pressure, and they need automated solutions that reduce their costs—and at the same time increase their print quality. With 15,000 units built, it is safe to say that MultiCam continues to provide those performance-proven benefits to printers in India and worldwide.”
A signage at the Quadtach stall stated, there are 875 installations in India.
MultiCam is advanced digital imaging technology that was developed specifically for the harsh pressroom environment. Many ‘off-the-shelf’ camera systems include the restriction of the sensor’s field of vision to a small section of the printing cylinder, rather than scanning the entire circumference.
MultiCam’s sensor harnesses specially-designed FPGA-based hardware to enable multitasking of mark recognition and other essential calculations. This approach allows the camera to view the entire repeat length of the web and cope with the volume of data generated. By doing so, the system can find marks more quickly, especially during periods of maximum register upset such as during a web splice.
Handling marks as small as 0.36 mm (0.014”), it can make up to 30 register mark searches per second. It is capable of operating at speeds of up to 17.8 m/sec (3,500 ft/min), faster than most newspaper presses’ maximum speed of 100,000 copies per hour. This ensures immediate recovery from web-tension upsets. In addition, LED lighting ensures long life and low maintenance.
Building on the success of MultiCam, QuadTech’s research and development team is nearing completion of a new product offering specifically targeting the Indian market. According to sources at QuadTech, the official launch of the new product is imminent.
Founded in 1979, QuadTech sells its automated auxiliary control systems in more than 100 countries to web offset newspaper and commercial markets, packaging and converting markets, and publication gravure market.
