Reliance commissions PET and PTA plants in Gujarat

Reliance Industries (RIL) announced the commissioning of 1,150 kilo tonnes per annum (KTA) purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and 650 KTA PET resin (polyethylene terephthalate) capacity at Dahej in Gujarat. The commissioning of this plant increases RIL's global capacity to produce 1.15 million metric tonnes per annum of PTA resin.

The PET plant, which has been built with Invista Technology for continuous polymerisation and Buhler technology for solid-state  polymerisation, will have two lines with a combined manufacturing capacity of 650 kilo tonnes per annum.

The new investment will increase RIL’s total PTA capacity to 3.2 million metric tonnes per annum and global capacity share to 4%, the company said in a statement.

The two feedstock for the new PET plant, Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) and Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG), will be made available within the Dahej complex.

"New capacity addition by Reliance will greatly help the downstream bottle and packaging industry in meeting the increasing demand from India and the region. India is one of the fastest growing markets for PET packaging with demand growing by 15-20% annually," RIL said in a statement.

The company has also integrated the PTA plant with a 650 KTA PET plant in the same complex which RIL says will help in lowering its operating cost and capture full chain margins.
