Like every year, this year too, the Globalocal Talk, organised by the German Book Office New Delhi, the South Asia node of the Frankfurt Book Fair, was an integral part of the New Delhi World Book Fair, which was held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from 9-17 January 2016.
The third edition of the Globalocal Talk was held in Hall 7 of Pragati Maidan on 13 January, with its focus on the international book market. The session allowed for an insider’s view of publishing markets like France, China, Germany, and the UK, which was shared among a full house audience of publishers, distributors, agents and authors. The event concluded with an evening of ‘Beer & Banter’.
The Globalocal Talk aims to bring together the most impressive practitioners from the trade to present their ideas and experiences.
Since ideas are the most powerful tools people have, this is an endeavour to present these ideas and stimulate conversations about the changing face of the content industry.
In a step forward to this, this year’s session revolved around the theme, ‘Go Global – Rights, Distribution and Content.’ The session had insights and top tips on how to successfully contract rights with global publishers from France, Germany, China, the UK and other countries. Speakers from France, Germany, the UK and China gave presentations which led to discussions on trading rights globally.
To bring up the finale, there was David Taylor, SVP, Ingram Content Group, who spoke to demystify the global distribution strategy for local publishers.
The event culminated in an evening of Beer & Banter at the Goethe Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan New Delhi, where a lovely collection of books on beer culture, flown in by GBO from Germany, were showcased and accompanied by an exhilarating talk on beer and art of brewing by Rahul Singh, CEO and founder, The Beer Cafe. Professionals from the world of publishing and allied industries attended the event.
The GBO New Delhi also had a stall at the New Delhi World Book Fair, which saw a whirlwind of activities, with visits and meetings, to highlight the possibilities at Frankfurt Book Fair 2016 and showcase selected German titles for rights exchanges.
Contemporary writing from Germany
Every year, the Frankfurt Book Fair puts together a number of book collections on different topical subjects. These include books which are currently being discussed in Germany and which are also noted with interest in other countries.
The 2016 collections include children’s books, new literary releases, a special collection on Beer and post-war memoirs. This year’s collection is curated by Literaturhaus Hamburg, and Professor Rainer Moritz chose the year’s most important novels, stories and poetry volumes.
They all have in common contemporary impressions of humour, family or politics. The most obvious feature of literature in 2015 has undoubtedly been the move by many writers to examine political and economic affairs, and to draw on 20th century history, in an attempt to understand current trends. This manifests itself with particular immediacy in depictions of refugee existences in many of the novels in this collection.
The GBO New Delhi can be contacted for more information, rights and sample translations of the collection showcased at the NDWBF 2016.
