"How many of us keep a password to unlock our phone? Do you realise how one can contact your family in case of emergency?” questioned Pradip Ghaisas, head of safety at TechNova at the Seekho aur Samjho (SaS) held at Government Institute of Printing Technology (GIPT) in Mumbai.
Safety is critical but sadly, the attitude towards safety is not a priority in India. Ghaisas said, "Safety is nothing but freedom from accidents."
He said, "When one refrains from all unsafe acts, for example, throwing a banana skin on the road, accidents will never occur." According to Heinrich theory, all unsafe acts and conditions form the foundation of accidents.
Safety from a fire in a printing press is a significant concern. At any given point, we have almost 20 types of inflammable chemicals in the press. These include the blanket wash, kerosene, and other solvent-based chemicals lying around the press.
Taking pre-emptive steps is necessary. For example, a guard on a machine is critical and so is to understand the instructions written on a package while using a chemical. Ghaisas said, "Why do we still use our hands to clean the rollers, which is a primary cause of injury in a press. Can we not use a cleaning tool for this purpose?"
"Housekeeping plays a vital role in the case of fire in an organisation. Thus, proper training is must," said Ghaisas. Also, on-the-job training is important to handle any emergency, pointed Ghaisas.
At the session he explained the different types of fire and the ways in which they can be controlled. “Risk control is essential and can be achieved by factors such as using administrative control, isolating hazard, and modifying system among others,” said Ghaisas.
Safety is necessary to safeguard human life, property, environment, and most importantly, the reputation of a firm,” he added. “Awareness of these little things can go a long way in preventing accidents.”
We agree.
