Sahas Softech: Exploring the third dimension of printing

A new entrant on the block, Sahas Softech, which is spearheaded by the trio of Samkit Shah, Sohrab Kothari and Sagar Shah has ventured into the business of 3D printing. Established in April 2012, the firm delivers, what they say, ‘your idea at your desk’.

Followed by hands on learning in 3D designing, 3D Printing and prototyping machines, the trio established the firm. “We did a thorough research of the trends in the industry in terms of applications and future prospects and 3D printing was the one that we believed as an industry, not only in scope, but also for its contribution to how an idea can evolve and be developed. While India is at a nascent stage in terms of awareness about the technology and its applications, it has seen a boom in the US market,” said Samkit.

Giving a glimpse of the market size and trends, Sohrab added, “There exist around seven types of 3D printing and rapid prototyping with more research already into developing much more comprehensive technologies increasing by the day; Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Inkjet Color Printing, Stereolithography (SLA), and used deposition modelling (FDM) being a few of the prominent one's. The technology is around 30-years old but the number of 3D print service providers in India are very few; about four to five to name.”

The takers of this technology? The trio claims that it is all and sundry who can benefit from this technology, from packaging to construction to medical industry. Their product portfolio includes prototypes of PET bottles, metal cans, dental casts, buildings and even the cast of a person. “While the tier-1 companies in certain sectors  and brand are aware of the capabilities and benefits of this technology, there is little awareness about its strengths in the tier-2 and tier-3 companies,” said Sagar.

The firm has a set-up in Vile Parle and Mulund areas of Mumbai. “Our clientele includes everyone from a brand to an architect to a designer. At our unit, we conceptualise, design, print, and deliver the finished product to the client. We are among the few who provide a colour output,” said the trio.

The advantages of the technology, they say are, time and cost saving. “For creating a prototype for, say a building, manually, one requires at least three to four days for a single piece. On the other hand, within a couple of days, we can design and produce any number of prototypes, and with precision.”

The trio is optimistic about the growth of the segment in India and wish to spearhead the 3D revolution in the country.
