Sappi takes steps towards a sustainable future

Sappi, the global paper and pulp company, is investing in a sustainable future. Its Gratkorn mill, located on both sides of the river Mur, near Australia's second-largest city, Graz, is reaping the rewards of a major investment scheme.

The mill has undergone upgrades in the past few years, including the upgrade of Paper Machine 9 in 2019 and a major modernisation project for Paper Machine 11. The mill has targeted reducing its carbon emissions by 41% per ton by 2030.

The mill has been thriving recently, based on the results of a Euro 25 million programme to improve quality and sustainability. The firm produces 2,50,000 tonnes of paper per year, and its wood is 60% sawmill by-products and 40% thinning trees.

Gratkorn's Paper Machine 9 produces wet glue and self-adhesive label papers and has now added wet-strength label papers to its portfolio. The Mill's Paper Machine 11 creates Magno paper in jumbo reels 8.5 metres wide and weighing about 80 tonnes.

In July 2024, the group was awarded the highest sustainability level by EcoVadis for six consecutive years. It has switched the boiler at Gratkorn from coal to biomass energy and has 80 projects in line to act as a catalyst to its decarbonisation process.
