An obituary by his team
When you teach one student, hundreds benefit. And when you teach hundreds of students, thousands benefit from the multiplier effect that follows. Satish Rege, a veteran educator who inspired and guided hundreds during his lifetime was one such person.
In his capacity as the principal of Institute of Screen Printing for more than 30 years, he trained hundreds of students in the process of screen printing. Today, they are spread all over the globe, taking Satish Rege's thoughts, concepts and above all, his approach towards screen printing far and wide, to each and every corner of the world, benefiting countless members of the screen printing community in the process.
In a country where the screen printing industry is largely unorganised, at a stage when formal
education was rarely available and learning 'on the job' an accepted norm, Satish Rege was one of the few pioneers who propagated the need for systematic or formal training. Over a tenure of three decades plus, Satish Rege was instrumental in shaping the mindset in terms of quality, systems at an industry level. His students are today incorporating Satish Rege's ideas and vision in their work. When Indian printers win awards at international forums, somewhere, his contribution is also felt.
Satish Rege played a multi-faceted role when it came to increasing industry awareness. He was
instrumental in helping to start the Screen Print India (SPI) magazine in year 1993. He was the
publication's editor right from its beginning and in that sense, Satish Rege played an important role in the development of the industry.
Over the years, even after shifting to a less active role as associate editor, he remained a constant source of support to the magazine. Satish Rege has taken awareness and education to an altogether different level by conducting a number of seminars all over India to guide printers.
Satish Rege was the editor of the Screen Print India magazine for a period of 15-16 years and also helped in shaping the Screen Print India exhibitions during the initial phase. He retired about eight years ago.
The screen printing industry extends condolences on Satish Rege's sad demise to his family. His
contributions will always be remembered and shall keep him alive in our memories.
