SIES gets a dose of paper gyaan

As a part of the Seekho aur Samjho technical workshop series, Siva Kumar of ITC covered key aspects of paper terminology, its correct usage and applications at the SIES Graduate School of Technology in Nerul, today (3 April).

During the session, Siva and Vibhav Upadhyay explained the surface properties and applications and explained the distinction between the three types of paperboard: WLC or recycled, SBS and FBB. He said, “SBS uses chemical pulping hence has higher whiteness and is odour neutral. Here, the lignin is eliminated and hence it is used for food packaging applications. The FBB uses mechanical pulp, thus some amount of lignin is retained and it appears yellowish. The lignin content in the FBB has higher mechanical strength.”

The Bombay Master Printer’s Association along with PrintWeek India (PWI) has announced Seekho aur Samjho technical workshop series for the benefit of print supervisors and operators. This initiative is co-supported by the Government Institute of Printing Technology, Mumbai and SIES Graduate School of Technology, Navi Mumbai.

The brainchild of BMPA president Faheem Agboatwala, the workshop will be in the form of a three-hour session including two hours training followed by Q&A. These sessions will be organised alternatively at GIPT and SIES GST.

“The idea is to create a platform for skill upgradation of the print personnel at the grass root level. Since we are trying to educate our workforce, the training will be imparted in Hindi. BMPA has collaborated with PWI and the two printing institutes in Mumbai - GIPT and SIES - in order to put together a year-long plan,” said Agboatwala.

The first ‘Seekho aur Samjho (SaS)’ workshop was conducted by Vishnuu R Kamat of AGS at the Government Institute of Printing Technology (GIPT) on 17 January. During this three hour session, press operators, supervisors and students from Mumbai learnt basics of colour and the correct usage of colour measurement devices.

Addressing an audience of more than 80, Kamat initiated his lecture with two basic theories of colour vision: Trichromatic and Opponent theory and demonstrated how colour is perceived and processed by the human eye and brain.

He then spoke about the CIE system of colour measurement with standard observer, standard illuminant and primaries. Plus he demystified the LabCh model and the concept of colour temperature in detail.

The theory session was followed by practical demonstration of dotmeter, densitometer and spectrophotometer, their usage, applications and difference between each of the devices. Kamat was assisted by his colleagues for the practical session.

The second Seekho aur Samjho (SaS) workshop, which was organised at SIES auditorium in Navi Mumbai, saw TechNova’s Avinash Kawadkar speak about on-press chemistry to an audience of more than 80 operators, supervisors and students.

During the three-hour workshop, Kawadkar identified the chemical hazards in the pressroom and shared tips to reduce the impact on operators’ health and environment. He spoke about the safety measures that one must implement on the shopfloor. 

He suggested the use of solvent resistant gloves for handling pressroom chemicals as normal gloves will dissolve in solvents. 

Kawadkar said, "Isopropyl alcohol (IPA), which has a flashpoint of 12 degree celsius, can form vapours at room temperature and these vapours when concentrated at one place tend to catch fire when introduced to a spark or fire. Hence the storage room should be well-ventilated and the electricity switch boards should be placed outside the room as a safety measures."

The third in the series of Seekho aur Samjho (SaS) workshops, transpired on 7 March at the Government Institute of Printing Technology, Mumbai, and focussed on bookbinding technology.

During the three-hour session, subject experts, Dinesh Ingawale and Mayur Bharate, from Welbound Worldwide discussed in detail the intricacies of binding and troubleshooting various issues related to it.

The session, in Hindi, also discussed PUR binding and its pros and cons over conventional hotmelt binding.
