Organised by the International Dairy Federation, the World Dairy Summit was being held in India for the first time since 1974.

The event also saw a conference on dairy for nutrition and livelihood, which was inaugurated by prime minister Narendra Modi. With an estimated 1,500 participants from all over the world, the conference saw leaders, policymakers, experts, and farmers from the dairy sector world over deliberate on how the industry might help feed the world's population safely and sustainably.
The dairy sector is one of the strongest components of India’s vast FMCG industry, both reflecting and continuing its journey as a global market leader. According to a statement from the PMO’s office, the Indian dairy industry is founded on a cooperative model that especially caters to small and marginal dairy producers, particularly women, who are the real leaders of the dairy sector. To this end, the government has taken several measures to further reinforce the dairy sector, as a result of which, India's milk output has increased by more than 44% during the past eight years.
