Indian labelstock manufacturer SMI has launched a new version of its labelstock specification sheets, making it application-oriented. “The idea is to help label converters select the right labelstock for a given application,” said Rohit Mehta, corporate director, SMI Coated Products.

The new set of specs sheet are divided into three sections. The first section specifies the industries where the labelstock can be used, namely, pharmaceutical, consumer products, lubricants, cosmetics, data tracking, liquor or electronic products.

The second section specifies the base substrates on which the label can be applied flawlessly. This section also provides a diagrammatic representation of different layers of the stock and specifies the parameters of the individual layers: face stock, adhesive and release liner.

The third section highlights peel adhesion, roll ball test, release value and shear value of the labelstock under consideration.

“We have also added adhesive coat weight to the specifications, which is generally not specified,” added Mehta.

SMI also provides a plastic template to measure curve diameter of containers and accordingly select right adhesive and labelstock to avoid problems after the label is applied on the container. “We want to make label converters to be solution providers. This tool will help the converters provide performance predictability to his customers,” added Mehta.

The company has also launched five out of seven modules containing labelstock information for five application industries: pharmaceutical, consumer products, lubricants, cosmetics and data track (barcode). The two remaining industries, liquor and electronic products, will be readied soon.
