Stahl set to expand into packaging coatings market with Weilburger Graphics acquisition

Stahl, a Dutch coatings manufacturer, has made a strategic move to expand its presence in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical markets with the acquisition of Weilburger Graphics. The German company Weilburger Graphics specialises in developing, manufacturing, and selling varnishes, inks, and adhesives for the graphic arts industry.

The acquisition, finalised in late August, involves the purchase of Weilburger Graphics from its parent company Grebe Holding. Weilburger Graphics, with a workforce of around 140, is valued at approximately 6 billion rupees, whereas Stahl employs about 2000 people globally.

This acquisition comes after Grebe Holding sold Weilburger Graphics’ subsidiary Weilburger Coatings to Kansai Helios, a European paint and coatings manufacturer, in May earlier this year. Weilburger Graphics is recognised for its diverse range of materials, including non-stick coatings for pans and sustainable graphics.

Stahl, known for providing specialty coatings and treatments for flexible materials, aims to leverage this acquisition to penetrate the foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical packaging coating markets. Upon obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals, the acquisition will not only expand Stahl’s portfolio but also offer a robust global platform for both companies in the market.

Both Stahl and Weilburger Graphics share a vision for sustainability, quality, and innovation. In August, Stahl received the Living Wage accreditation as part of its ESG roadmap, demonstrating its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This aligns well with Weilburger Graphics' values, providing additional motivation for the merger.
