Strength in unity among Danish Press

A newspaper production house can save paper by improving its paper handling, logistics and storage practices, and also by using lower-grammage newsprint. Also, coming together under one platform helps. This was the focus of the talk by Thomas Isaksen, CEO, Procurement Association of the Danish Press, Denmark, at the Wan-Ifra conference in Mumbai on 2 September 2015.

During his talk, Isaksen emphasised on the strength in unity, and explained how the Procurement Association of Danish Press worked to keep the cost of Danish newspapers low for their readers. “We can all benefit when we all come together under one roof, especially medium and small printers. We get better quality and lower prices because we are united. We also get technical benefits and classes on paper handling and others from manufacturers,” he said.

Newsprint is more than 50% of the cost of newspaper production. Isaken said to reduce newsprint consumption in Denmark, around 85% of newspaper publication houses are using 40 gsm newsprint for newspaper production and 42/42.5 gsm paper for commercial jobs. “Lower-grammage newsprints also consume less ink. Thus, a printer can save on ink as well,” he said.

“We have an agreement with every member of the association that it has to buy paper from us, since the market always fluctuates. But, the biggest advantage for our members is that each and everyone will get the newsprint on the same price, whatever their consumption figures may be, Isaksen added.
