According to company sources, the greenfield facility at Mannaparai will be coal-based and expected to go on stream by this June. The company will import the raw material.
The paper board plant is expected to be ready by the end of 2015.
In 2013-14, the company augmented its captive power generation capacity to 103.62-mw from 81.12-mw. TNPL self-generates 99.2% of its power requirements and draws only 0.8% from the state grid.
TNPL was established by the state government in the early 80s to produce newsprint and printing and writing paper using bagasse as primary raw material.
The Unit I of TNPL was commissioned in 1985 with an installed capacity of 90,000-tpa of newsprint and fine paper. Over the years, the Unit is now equipped with state-of-the-art automation in all three modern high-speed paper machines, producing over 4,40,000-tpa, making TNPL one of the prominent bagasse-based paper manufacturers across the globe.
In the quest to become the world leader in the pulp and paper industry, a paperboard project was conceived by TNPL, paving the way for the emergence of Unit II. Spanning over an area of 874 acres in Mondipatti, Trichy district, TNPL Unit II was designed to produce 2,00,000-mt high-grade paperboard per annum. With a record of completing the whole project in a span of just 18 months, Unit II currently produces just over 2,00,000-mt per annum.
The company installed the first wind farm of 15-mw capacity in 1993-94 at Devarkulam Perungudi in Tirunelveli district. Since then, it has increased its capacity to 35.5-mw in stages. The wind farm power is partly exported to the grid and partly consumed in the factory by wheeling.
