Excelling for the third consecutive time, Ahmedabad-based Marvel Graphic Studio’s printing of artworks for artists, Shanti Dave, Amit Ambalal, Ravindra Salve, had the judges riveted to the prints. “There is no doubt that the originals would have been a wonderful pieces of work, but I also do not think that much has been lost (and perhaps something gained) while reproducing the serigraphy works,” said one of the judges.

While the original works have been done on canvas, Marvel’s Dhanvi Shah, says, “We have used colours in a very different manner. We have stuck to the artistic approach or element that was in the original painting. One can say, we have brought the fine arts into serigraphy.”

While Shah explains the intricacies of all the serigraphy works, he shares one experience about the Shanti Dave work. “The artist, being from the village, has shown the cowdung layered house, which is a tradition in villages. We gave the prints a similar effect, depicting the life lived in a village,” he says. “It’s an important cultural legacy, we wish to carry forward through our prints, our works.”

The other important part about the Dave serigraphy is that it was reproduced from a transparency (TP) slide. From a small copy to the size 14.50x35inch, was a new and challenging experience for Shah. “The work itself was technically sound and marvellously composed. We had to bring in all our expertise, merging it with the artist’s skill into the print.”

The four entries have had print runs in the range of 90 to 125, with tones of colour/screens ranging from 35 to 56, which took more than 35 to 45 days to print.

For the third time in succession, the judges felt that it’s the genuine craftsmanship of Marvel that has made the entries so stunning. And the skills in executing the art, creating the images and tones so stunning, enhances the richness of the prints. “Excellent works.”
