Book Printer Of The Year

Jak Printers (Mumbai)

Tel:  91-22-2377 2222 / mail@jakprinters.com

Jak Printers seems to have made this Award its own. Winning the accolade for the fourth consecutive time, Jak scored consistently highly across all the four samples of work submitted. Saris Splendor in Threads; Stories in Glass; Ashavans: A Legacy of Leadership; and
Vintage Bhopal stood out in terms of production.

Printing a run-length of 1,000 to 2,000 copies of the above works, Jak produced the books on Heidelberg Speedmaster 102S, a 28x40inch six-colour press, plates for which were fired on a Heidelberg Suprasetter platesetter. Proofing was done using the Epson Stylus Pro 9880 with Heidelberg’s Prinect connecting the entire workflow.

All the four samples featured hardcase binds with jacket. The book Saris Splendour in Threads came in for special praise for the unusual metpet foil laminated jacket and the hot foil stamped hardcase cover and the inside pages produced with Sappi-Magno Satin paper. Another submission – Ashavans: A Legacy of Leadership’s special feature included gilding on the edge of the book block. The hardcase cover was themal matt laminated while the jacket was embossed with liberal use of spot UV gloss.

Established in 1984 in a modest building, Jak has over a period of time established a solid reputation for its uncompromising stand on quality, providing services ranging from concept; designing layouts and art-works to scanning; proofing and films to printing; and finishing.

The finished products were well-received by the clients and according to the judges, these were examples of “excellent printing and binding” throughout.

Brochure Printer Of The Year

Parksons Graphics (Mumbai)

Tel: 91-22-6692 4611 / info@parksonsgraphics.com

Straddling the print world are a handful of printers who are rapidly emerging as key figures in the Indian print industry. Chief among them is Parksons Graphics, a commercial cum magazine printer, also a noted playing cards printer and winner of this category.

Parksons Graphics secured the top spot for the four entries: New Cuffe Parade brochure for Lodha Developers; Mercedes Benz brochure for Mercedes Benz; World One brochure again for Lodha Developers; and L‘Oreal Wedding Collection brochure for Ergo India. The quantities varied from 500 to 6,000 copies

The judges were impressed by the print and finishing that according to them “brought to life the subject” that these brochures depicted with its very visual display of the product, the soft, subtle colours used throughout.

For example: A Mercedes brochure always set the bar high for Parksons Graphics and this E-Class brochure was no exception. The brochure used images of the car and according to Parksons Graphics, due to the nature of images, the printing required a very good colour balance, to ensure that there was no cast. And the solid silver picks up scratches very easily, hence due care had to be taken during the production, says Parksons Graphics.

The New Cuffe Parade and World One brochures were designed to showcase luxury and were printed on a 200gsm Natural Evolution and 280gsm Impressive Absolute White. The slipcase for New Cuffe Parade was printed on 160gsm Favini Cobble white. According to the company the client demanded a thick and luxurious feel for the World One brochure.

The L’Oreal Wedding Collection was printed as a hardcase and a softcover. “This meant that though the binding and pagination were different, the brochure had to look identical. To achieve this across a run of over 6,000 brochures required a strong process and a good team,” states Parksons Graphics. The printing was done on coloured paper, with very subtle varnish adding a motif and a rich gold lettering.

For all these brochures, print, sewing and binding wasn’t easy, said Parksons Graphics, adding, “These techniques, however, are not new to us.”

In 1957, Parksons Graphics entered the printing industry as manufacturers of playing cards. Over the years, the company continued to add capacity. According to Abhishek Kejriwal, the new-generation director at Parksons, the company has upgraded its pre-press workflow to Kodak’s Prinergy and installed a new five-colour CD 74 Heidelberg and added section-sewing, gathering, perfect binding, as well. Parksons is also one of the few printers to be FSC certified.

The brochures were printed on the Heidelberg CD74-5LX and CD 102 presses, while Kodak plates were outputted on a Creo 8-Up Trendsetter using a Prinergy workflow. Post-press included galley-making, punching, mesh fitting, thermal gloss lamination, spot UV and debossing.

Business Magazine Printer Of The Year

Jak Printers (Mumbai)

Tel:  91-22-2377 2222 mail@jakprinters.com

The second Award of the year for Jak Printers comes for Business Magazine and all the four magazines were closely examined and discussed by the judges in great detail. Equipped with a raft of multi-colour presses, in-house pre- and post-press machinery, the Mumbai-based sheetfed specialist’s work on IFJ-41 for Index Media; G2 magazines for Vardhaman; and Art India – Graphic Novels & Comics for Art India Publishing impressed the judges in terms of professionalism and quality. According to the judges what caught the eyes was that the magazines had a variety of finishing like thermal matt lamination on the IFJ-41; hot foil stamping on the G2; while the Art India magazine had an aqua varnish finishing. There wasn’t the “sameness” to these magazines, said one judge.

The magazines were produced on a Heidelberg GTO F52, a 15x20inch five-colour press and Heidelberg Speedmaster 102S, a 28x40inch six-colour press, utilising the Heidelberg Suprasetter to fire plates and an Epson Stylus Pro 9880 with the EFI XF RIP and Prinect connecting the presses’ workflow.

Operating with a slogan of “making a difference”, the partners, proud winners and “print fanatics” Khushru Patel and Aspi Forbes have recognised Jak’s ingenuity to achieve success and this Award is a testimonial to Jak’s ability to excel.

Jak’s success illustrates the firms technical ability and teamwork, which the Patel and Forbes say enables total customer satisfaction and in turn leads to growth and one time management tip that they give on the shopfloor is: “make sure the docket is perfectly handed over to the shopfloor supervisors”.

Catalogue Printer Of The Year

Silverpoint Press

Tel: 91-22-24939908   / sales@silverpointindia.com

A joint winner last time around, Silverpoint Press seemed to have left no stone unturned to make the entries better than the previous year. The company produced four top quality brochures which included: Nirali Trends – Incredible India catalogue for Nirali Trends; More Ideas on your Wall catalogue for GM-Modular; Godrej Locks – product catalogue for Godrej Locks and  Mudra Life/Luxury/Prosperity catalogue for Beaumach Designs.

The catalogues produced by Silverpoint were attractive and cleanly designed, and according to the judges demonstrated a sense of how it can fit into a brand’s communication and engagement activities. The judges were particularly impressed by the finishing delivered on each of the four samples.

Based on an Indian theme, 300 copies of the Incredible India catalogue were printed and included design elements which needed die-cutting, multi-foiling, embossing, pop-up fabrication. The hardcase cover was hot-foil stamped in green and copper colour.

The judges were also impressed with the Godrej Locks catalogue. The entire concept of quick reference has been well executed, says Silverpoint and the judges could not agree less. The entire book is wiro-bound and enclosed in hardcase cover for protection of the catalogue.

Established more than three decades ago, Silverpoint is one of the leading commercial printers based in Mumbai and offers high quality sheetfed and heatset web facilities for a wide range of products. The company has added digital capability with the installation of an HP Indigo 3550 for short-run work.

The company lays a lot of emphasis on managing the colour of the print jobs it does. According to Saifee Makasarwala, COO, Silverpoint, many of the artists and graphic design professionals working for his company’s clients have high expectations in terms of colour quality and accuracy. It is a standardised process right from capturing images to pre-media and later, printing.

More than 60% of printing at Silverpoint is done on speciality paper. Makasarwala says, “Apart from managing colour, choosing the correct paper accentuates the desired colour and sharpness.”

The catalogues were produced on Heidelberg CD 102 and Heidelberg LX five-colour presses with online coaters, both presses in sizes 28x40inches. The company used Agfa’s Apogee to drive its workflow and GMG colour management to deliver accurate high quality digital pre-press files that were fired on a thermal CTP system. Silverpoint used a range of specialty papers which included Sensation Artist Bright White 170gsm, Zanders Medley Velvet matt finish, Leykam matt card and metallic shimmer gold.

Consumer Magazine Printer Of The Year

Spenta Multimedia (Mumbai)

Tel: 91-22-6734 1010 / ho@spentamultimedia.com

In the commended list for the last two editions – 2010 and 2011, Spenta Multimedia has emerged triumphant in this edition. Thanks to the production that the judges said was simply “super”, with high-quality print used across the four submissions:  Adorn, Domus, India Boating and Marwar.

According to judges, the prints provided the consistency throughout with interesting cover designs and photography provided by Spenta. The designs were produced in-house. This meant the typography was well used and with purpose. “The design and print of the inside text delivers the promise the cover designs display,” said one judge.

With a stable of 40-plus titles, Spenta’s Manek Davar and Minoo Davar still nourish ambitions to grow. Maneck Davar states, “We do everything”. And so, the group creates the content, sells ad space, and prints and distributes more than 40 custom magazines, some of which are JetWings, The Chartered Accountant Journal, Apparel, Solitaire, First Update, Imperia, @TCS, Priority Pages, Milestones, Shubh Labh, and a newsletter for Bombay Gymkhana.

In the consumer segment, besides the four submission, Spenta has magazines such as Hair, The Smart Manager, and Liquid among others.

The four entry magazines were printed on Heidelberg SM 102 and Heidelberg SM 74, both four-colour machines.

Besides the Heidelberg SM 102 and SM 74, Spenta’s press equipment includes a Heidelberg SM-102 eight-colour, Heidelberg SM-102 two-colour, and a Screen CTP system. Binding has a Muller Martini Acoro A5 automated perfect binding machine, three Stahl folding machines, pinning, punching and foiling, lamination and shrink wrapping machinery.

Spenta is a Zoroastrian word and means “the fount of everything that’s good”.  This is Manek Davar’s philosophy too.

Tel: 91-80-25291395 / healingtool@gmail.com

First time entrant at the PrintWeek India Awards contest, the Bengaluru-based Healing Tool wins the PrintWeek India Creative Repro Company of the Year.

According to judges, it was the company’s “beautiful composition skills” that beat off the competition to win the Award.

“The quality of imagery has never been more important than it is today,” said one judge who represented an advertising/creative agency, highlighting the diverse selection of high end, creative retouching that was manifest in the submission of Healing Tool, be it Nalli Sarees composition work, reprographic work for McCann in Bengaluru or the one for DDB Mudra in Bengaluru.

The judges were particularly impressed with the work done on the TVS Scooty campaign, where elements were fused to create a motor way for the sleek scooter; and the Peter England campaign, which fuses composition of jean to create a “guitar” feel.

Digital Printer Of The Year

Avantika Printers (New Delhi)

Tel: 91-11-2621 5580 / mnpandey@appl.in / mail@mnpandey.com

For New Delhi-based Avantika Printers winning this year’s Digital Printer of the Year Award made it a two in two years. Winning for the second consecutive year, caught the eyes of the judges with their entries: Canon Media Catalogue for Canon India; and Glimpses of Thar, Suvali and a wall calendar for Cairn India.

The quality of the entries stood out for its creativity and pushed the envelope. The judges noted that Avantika paid close attention to the requirement of its clients. For example, the Canon Media catalogue had to depict the capability of Canon’s Imagepress C7010VP machine to deliver quality on different substrates and image inputs. “Colour consistency had to be maintained,” says Avantika, which according to the company, was maintained through “robust process control” on 27 different substrates giving customised UV treatment on traditional design.

The judges also thought that the Suvali book’s real-time visual feel of offshore drilling in sea grabbed attention. Avantika says, it was created through an innovative digital printing on laminate foil substrate.

The wall calendar’s deceptive look as an LCD panel was the USP of this job. “Easy to change date sheet, fully functional was a modest innovation,” says M N Pandey of Avantika. He adds, “it satisfied the discerning client.”

The print runs for the entries ranged from 30 to 150 copies and were printed using the Canon Imagepress 7010VP machine.

Avantika recently completed 23 years in the print industry. The Canon dominated digital press floor also houses a mono Xerox digital printer for single-colour work, a screen printing facility and a complete facility for post-press, which produces an array of ingenious print jobs.

Delhi-based Avantika Printers has Pandey, a teacher of mathematics in Ayodhya at the helm. A man who is prone to uttering maxims like: “Digital is the grandson of print – and it is definitely the future.”

Pandey believes that four things create a great job. “They are men, machines, implementation of the latest technologies,” and as he says, “above all, the vision of the head of the organisation.”

Fine Art Printer Of The Year

Marvel Graphic Studio (Ahmedabad)

Tel: 91-79-26870256 / marvelartgallery@gmail.com

Ahmedabad-based Marvel Graphic Studio has for the second successive time excelled in this form of print. Marvel won the Fine Art Printer of the Year Award for printing of art works: Curiosity Kills the Cat, a collection of playing cards aimed at creating curiosity among the people of life, game and art; artist Ratan Parimoo’s  water-colour painting titled ‘Vegetable market’, 54 year old work and Boats in Srinagar, water colour on paper done in 1958; and artist Thota Vaikuntam’s acrylic on canvas.

According to Marvel, the process to print – Curiosity Kills the Cat took four months, which included concept, die-cutting, separation and other detailed process. Printing 250 sets of cards (54 cards per set) took 60 days. There are over eight to nine colours/screens per card and the paper used in this serigraph is Somerset Satin White of 300gsm.

The judges felt that it’s the genuine craftsmanship that made the entries so stunning. And the craftsmanship in serigraphy, that of creating stunning realistic images in colour and tone using screen printing, was also made its mark with the another three limited edition work sent by Marvel.

“Bringing the atmosphere alive was itself very challenging,” says Dhanvi Shah, director at Marvel. The art was created in 1958 with a very unique style of painting, where the artist first applied the colour where he wished and then drew the linear lines instead of drawing lines and then filling in the colours. “That was the tricky part; to bring that same linearity in order to maintain that identify of the artist,” says Shah. The 80 edition work was produced in 40 days (with separation and printing) and used over 32 tones of colours/screens.

“This print was fun for us,” says Shah while describing artist Thota Vaikuntam’s work. “We had to change our style of treating the print as this serigraph demanded us to serve it with flat colours,” he says. Here too Marvel used 27 tones of colour/screens for 75 editions, which was printed in 50 days.

Innovative Printer Of The Year

Parksons Graphics (Mumbai)

Tel: 91-22-6692 4611 / info@parksonsgraphics.com

This was one of the category which saw a photo-finish result. Parksons Graphics inched ahead of its nearest competitor Marvel Graphic Studio’s ‘Curiosity Kills the Cat’ (by a mere point) on the usability factor for its Note n Tote Bag entry.

While judging the awards, the jury looked into how much the entries support the overall efforts in print, usability, understanding of the target audience and available resources besides innovation.

As one judge said, innovation occurs at the edges of organisations. Innovators must have foresight; must be able to conceive a product in a compelling manner and they must execute successfully. The note n Tote Bag entry had all those qualities.

Parksons Graphics is a commercial-cum-magazine printer, also a noted playing cards printer used a Sakurai flatbed press, outputting screen positive with a Prinergy workflow. Stitching was used as a post-press force.

The bag is designed to be carrybag – a clutch and collapses into a travel pouch. The Bag produced for 61c had a run-length of 500 and used 105gsm Tyvek paper. “We had to do embroidery on jobs, and we were able to utilise our skills and equipment to take on the entire stitching of a bag,” says Parksons Graphics. “We are a printer, and this job is an example of versatility and value-addition that we can offer in print today.”

Pragati Pack India (Hyderabad)

Tel: 91-40-2372 0475, 6527 1141 / info@pragati.com

New Delhi-based Any Graphics and Hyderabad-based Pragati Pack were judged as the joint winners in this category.

Any Graphics produced the Aloe Vera labels for Mirambika; Leaf label for Prime Houseware; Jordan label for Jordon Label; and the Senate label for Tilak Nagar Industries.

The labels were printed on a six-colour plus inline coater, fully loaded interdeck UV, letterpress printing machine. Pre-press was done through Esko workflow ripped through an Esko Merge/Expose software and blocks made of Esko 2120 CTP. Post-press included die-cut online on the letter press printing machine and Zund cutting plotter with an Eye-cut camera for scanning and cutting the labels with accuracy. Metallised polyester film with a clear release liner, clear PVC film, Bopp film, and 250 micron polycarbonate substrates were put to use.

The special features on Jordon label came in for special praise. The “natural feel” of the flower on the label was evident, according to the judges. Any Graphics says, the individual grains of petals and drops have been treated and distinguished separately. Nothing is embossed on this label, the chrome effect, halftone and the embossing features are all done using screen printing process.

The 25-year old Any Graphic is an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 and one of the leading printing and packaging companies in India. A one-stop solution provider, Any Graphics offers a range of products: mono cartons, self adhesive labels, dome stickers, graphics, panel overlays, warranty seals, commercial print, blister cards and publicity.

In this category, Pragati Pack sent in its Nupal Remedies’ Kamilari Liver Supplement label, Haldiram’s Red Chilli Pickle label, Manson’s Extracts’ Indulekha Coconut Milk Shampoo label and Krishna Chigurupati’s Krsma Estates – Cabernet Sauvignon label.

All the labels were produced on the eight-colour full UV MPS EC 330 press using Dupont plates outputted on Esko CDI HD Flexo platesetter. The post-press included texture and gloss effect, emboss UV on brand and image, holographic UV and die-cut to shape and size. PP White paper and metalised papers were put to use.

The judges liked the combination of spot holography along with the raised UV in the branding area, which one of the judges said, “really lifts the label”. According to Pragati Pack, the company used spot holographic effect on the background and an embossed UV process on the branding to achieve the enhanced appeal.

Pragati Pack is a sister company of Pragati Offset and Pragati Flexo. In January 2007, Pragati kickstarted its label project with the installation of an eight-colour MPS EF 410 and a Nilpeter narrow-web flexo press. In February last year, the company installed a brand new Steinemann Lotus 102SF solvent-free lamination machine, which complemented its latest addition to the press armoury, an MPS flexo 330mm eight-colour press, the first installation in India.

Newspaper Printer Of The Year

Dainik Jagran (Jagran Prakashan)

Tel: 91-99109 61417 / singhsk@nda.jagran.com

The challenges of printing 37 editions across eleven states of India are enormous. More than 55.7 million people read Dainik Jagran. According to the IRS Q1 2012, Dainik Jagran ranked No 1 Hindi daily with a total readership (TR) of 16,412 million.

Winning the Award for the first time, Dainik Jagran, scored in colour consistency, which according to the judges is crucial, particularly for advertising.

The newspaper segment in India continues to be impressive, this inspite of e-newspapers, blogs and other online communications” said one judge. With a print run of 4,15,000 copies, printed on a Manugraph CityLine 30 fitted with a Quadtech auto-registration system, Dainik Jagran produced this robust, informative and visually interesting print publication.

Krause violet CTP fired the plates using Agfa Arkitek with Harlequin RIP software. SCA and Solikamaski imported paper was put to use.

The genesis for Dainik Jagran was in the year 1942. The year when the freedom struggle of India reached its crescendo and found expression in the “Quit India movement”. Dainik Jagran was launched during this time with the vision of its founder Shri Puran Chandra Gupta, to “create a newspaper that would reflect the free voice of the people”. Besides its large readership base, Dainik Jagran has also been voted as the Most Credible Source of News in a BBC-Reuters survey.

Packaging Converter Of The Year

Pragati Pack India

Tel: 91-40-2372 0475, 6527 1141 / info@pragati.com

Pragati Pack followed up its win in the Label category with another in the Packaging Convertor category with its four varied samples that all drew praise from the judges.

The company produced 9,000 Black Dog 21 years cartons for United Spirits; 300 Seven Islands cartons for Tilaknagar Industries; 20,000 Maker’s Mark cartons for Beam Global; and 20,000 Vladivar Vodka cartons for United Spirits.

The Black Dog 21 years’ special feature was the soft touch lamination, foiling and spot UV. The rigid box was constructed with magnetic closure flat. The velvet finish is used to enhance the quality of the box, while the thermoformed velvet flock HIPS material ensure high impact strength and no scratches on the bottle or label. The judges were impressed by the simple, modern design style and its consistent execution. “The use of material was not flashy, but practical, forward looking and action-oriented.”

But special mention must go to the Seven Islands cartons and the octagonal shape, which according to Pragati Pack, is quite unique. “The outer pack is printed on metallised PET with online texture and gloss, while the inner is made specially with a soft compressible foam and wrapped with metallised matt gold PET,” says Pragati Pack. The stitching of the background does enhance the box appeal, said one Judge. The bottle is held at the bottom through an EVA foam structure, locking for which is done using magnets.

The packs were printed on a Mitsubishi Diamond 1000 UV press with double coater in CMYK plus special colours. The CTP plates were fired at 200lpi screening.

Point-Of-Purchase (Pop) Printer Of The Year

Spectrum Scan

Tel: 91-22-6660 4612, 6660 4613, 24937681, 24952615 / marketing@spectrummail.com

A joint winner last year, Spectrum Scan excelled this time around to win the Point of Purchase (POP) Printer of the Year with a range of displays and dispensers.

According to the judges, the Spectrum’s entries stood out because it clearly defined the objectives and fulfilled the missions with creative solutions. “Effectiveness and efficiency are important factors in POP products and these entries clearly stood out,” was the jury statement.

Spectrum produced Kinder Joy, a table-top display-cum-dispenser for Ferro India; a Garnier light - calculator dispenser for Garnier; and two versions of Gears of War Dynamic displays – a small and a large for Microsoft Xbox 360.

Spectrum produced 500 units of Kinder Joy. The design work was outsourced and modified to the thermoforming requirements. The print job was done using a four-colour offset printer and CMYK colours. The die used for this job was produced in-house and thermoformed high impact polystyrene (HIPS) was trimmed to the required shape and mounted on the self adhesive vinyl branding. Offset printing was used on self adhesive vinyl. According to Amit Shah, director of Spectrum, the POP provides high visibility and is very eye-catching. “The unique shape and the house coloured HIPS replicates the product itself.”

The design work for this 250 units of console-based game was done completely in-house. An Adobe file of the print job was used to print this point-of-purchase digitally using Roland Ecosolvent in CMYK. The entire work was printed on self adhesive vinyl. The print job was mounted on a polypropylene (PP) flute, each element was intricately assembled to mirror a pendulum like movement.

Spectrum Scan started operations in a single gala in 1987. By the time, the company had shifted its mother-plant to Vasai, it acquired a reputation for big ideas and aggressive marketing in POP/POS market with wide-format machines. The company has now further expanded the Vasai project with another 45,000 sq/ft site next to the present one. What is unique about Spectrum Scan is the raft of thermoforming machines which the company has developed indigenously. The process (totally under wraps) involves printing and forming, providing a complete signage and POP solution, right from conceptualising to the final product. A wide variety of materials like PETG, HIPS, PP, PC, PVC, acrylic are deployed.

Interestingly, spectrum’s mother plant at vasai has a little garden, which shah lovingly tends. He says, rather wistfully, “if i was not a printer, i would be a farmer.”

Poster Printer Of The Year

Silverpoint Press (Mumbai)

Tel: 91-22-24939908 / sales@silverpointindia.com

This category has thrown up four different winners in the last four editions. Bengaluru’s Autographics Digital won the inaugural edition, followed by Antz Innovation from Trichy in Tamil Nadu in 2010 and last year Hyderabad’s Pragati Offset won the awards for its eye-catching entries.

The winner for Poster Printer of the Year 2012 is Silverpoint Press.

Silverpoint won the Award for the Smirnoff posters produced for JWT; Mercedes Benz posters for Mercedes Benz India; and Parachute Advansed Calendar posters for Mac-Erickson.

These posters were printed in different run-length: from 500 to 23,000 copies. The Smirnoff poster was printed on 170gsm Lumi art paper using Heidelberg Sordz two-colour press. Cyan and magenta were printed in first pass and yellow and black during the second pass. After printing the sheets were laminated by special pressure sensitive texture lamination.

The Mercedes Benz MB posters were printed on Natural Evolution white 280gsm paper. Heidelberg’s LX five-colour press with in-line coater was used to print these posters. The entire job was printed with standard density to produce accurate colour depth which gave good impact to the poster.

Leykam art paper of 170gsm was used for the Mercedes Benz posters. Heidelberg’s LX five-colour press with in-line coater was used to print these posters. Gloss aqueous coating was used to add to the shine of the poster.

The parachute advansed calendar was the stand-out entry. The calendar was printed on the heidelberg lx five-colour press with inline coating unit and hp indigo 3350 digital press. The calendar was printed in two parts and later joined and pasted to make a single unit. The calendar is folded, but released with each month. The folded part is held by hair clips, displaying the image on the background (displaying hair) and months up to current. The gradual opening of the calendar conveys the message that hair growing as a process is gradual, everyday and beautiful. “this entry is very innovative and a job well executed,” said a lady judge.

Pur Book Maker Of The Year

Pragati Offset (Hyderabad)

Tel: 91-40-2338 0000 / info@pragati.com

Pragati Offset has been the recipient of the newly introduced Award, PUR Book Maker of the Year.

Pragati Offset sent in four PUR bound books that were produced in its in-house PUR binding equipment. They are Frames Magazine for Bajaj Finserv – 12,000 copies; Royale Play Catalogue for Asian Paints – 30,000 copies; Divas of Deccan for Neekamal Publication - 1,750 copies; and Rachnotsav Events Academy Brochure for Rachnotsav Events – 3,000 copies.

PUR has only been in bookbinding since about 1989, but was seen in production during PrintPack India 2011 at the Welbound stall, where it produced annual diaries. Since then a few of the printers, including Pragati have brought in PUR systems to bolster their post-press armoury. PUR has come to be valued for premium books, annual reports, catalogues, directories and magazines.

Each of the products sent by Pragati had something unique. For example, the Frames Magazine had high ink coverage and was an upmarket magazine; hence it needed a high binding strength at the same time eliminating the need to sew.

The Royale Play Catalogue had swatches of Royale Play effects in both regular and metallic versions. Pragati used 12-colours and print in two passes. Since catalogues tend to be handled extensively by multiple customers, Pragati used PUR binding, it says.

According to Pragati Offset, PUR has allowed it to give the highest strength to its produce, without the need for sewing/pinning. And the judges were pleased by the PUR’s “non-wrinkling” in the gutter area, a problem that is prevalent with traditional adhesive.

The printing of the entries was done on mitsubishi press in cmyk plus online coating.

Reports And Accounts Printer Of The Year

CDC Printers (Kolkata)

Tel: 91-33-2329 8856 / cdc@cdcprinters.com

&

Parksons Graphics (Mumbai)

Tel: 91-22-6692 4611 / info@parksonsgraphics.com

Another of the category where the judges have rated the entries of two companies for the Award. CDC Printers of Kolkata and Parksons Graphics, Mumbai.

While Parksons Graphics was the winner of this Award last year, CDC Printers makes a comeback to the Awards arena. Both the companies sent four sets of quality entries.

CDC Printers sent in Report and Accounts of Shyam Steel, Greenply, Dhunseri Petrochem & Tea, and Balrampur Chini Mills while Parksons sent those of Hindusthan National Glass & Industries, Jammu & Kashmir Bank, Responsive Industries, and RSIL.

The judges acknowledged these two companies have understood “the boundless role that aesthetics play” in making the annual reports attractive.

While all the CDC Printers entries were appreciated, the judges made a special mention of the Greenply entry, which asked a question: see something here?... on the cover page and on the next page it had the words: ‘Foresight, Product excellence, Environment friendliness’, all in large font followed by …. ‘all at Greenply’ in small print. According to the judges, this was sustainability in action, with a strong and consistent use of colours, images and typography carried throughout the pages. The print was beautifully handled.

CDC printed the annual reports on its Mitsubishi Diamond 1000 four-colour plus coater and Heidelberg SM 102 four-colour presses.

It was a similar case for Parksons Graphics, whose HNGIL Delux Annual Report whose jacket resembled the metamorphosis of a cocoon into a butterfly. The judges were pleased with the fabrication of the jacket, which opened to reveal a glittering butterfly peeping out of a verbatim die-cut image.

For parksons graphics, this ranks as one of their best work they have done in the annual report business. The company had only three days to turn around the job which had a print run of only 500 but a design that was intricate and needed to be converted into reality with no tolerance for error. And when parksons delivered the annual reports, the client had just one word to say, “unbelievable”.
