The Book Printer of the Year 2013 honours are shared by Jak Printers and Prodon Enterprise.
Both the winners displayed the highest quality of printing married to precision in binding, in order to produce an enhanced reading experience for the readers.
Prodon Enterprise’s entries which include Rolls Royce 17 EX, Husain – Works from the collection of the Late Badrivishal Pitti, 94 East Church and Kashmir Shawls were printed on a Mitsubishi Diamond 1000 LS.
All of the pre-press was outsourced. Prodon Enterprise showcased its versatility when it comes to the use of substrates. All of their samples were printed on different substrates, with multiple substrates being used in a single job. Inner page online satin coating was a highlight of all their samples. While the printing of the images in Roll Royce book is in harmony with that of the car, an icon of luxury, the 94 East Church’s creasing was designed and done using step format so that the pages can be easily turned.
Jak Printers have now won the Book Printer of the Year award for the fifth year in a row. Between Bombay and Mumbai, Dome over India, India’s 100 Best Destinations and Light and Shade in Life’s Glade were the four entries submitted by Jak Printers.
Printing a run-length of 300 to 4,000 copies of the above works, Jak produced the books on a Heidelberg Speedmaster 102S, a 28x40inch six-colour press, plates for which were fired on a Heidelberg Suprasetter platesetter. Proofing was done using the Epson Stylus Pro 9880 with EFI XF RIP while Heidelberg’s Prinect connected the entire workflow.
A wide range of post-press processes were used to provide unmatched aesthetic appeal. Velvet lamination, thermal matt lamination, hot foil stamping, embossing and block fitting (manual) were some of the technologies used in the production of these submissions.
Established in 1984 in a lovely building in Byculla (Mumbai), Jak has over a period of time established a solid reputation for its uncompromising stand on quality.

Printing a brochure can sometimes be a very complex undertaking, requiring attractive and clean design and print. It should “go beyond the surface glitz to demonstrate a sense of how it fits into the brand’s communication and engagement activities,” said one jury member, who was judging the entries.
According to the judges, two companies, Silverpoint Press and Vishwakala Printers, and their entries, integrated these qualities well and were declared the joint winners.
Silverpoint Press, the Mumbai-based print company won the Award for their catalogue entries – Lodha Evoq, Inspire-Create, Jaguar F-type, and Torque Necklaces.
While the judges were impressed with the catalogue entries Inspire-Create, Jaguar F-type, and Torque Necklaces, the catalogue, Lodha Evoq, which was a combination of the catalogue itself and ship case, came in for special mention. The catalogue had a distinctive image, look and feel, said the judges and observed the careful planning that went into the processes to achieve the results. The catalogue was printed for Lodha Dwellers. It had a print run of 1,000 copies. The text job was printed on 200gsm Impressive Absolut while using five-colour, CMYK and special orange. The two+two-colour printed cover included offline UV curing on silver laminated card. The same was done for the ship case.
Bengaluru-based Vishwakala Printers, one of the joint winners of this category in 2011, returns again as the joint winner for its catalogue entries – Tanishq – A Ganga 2013, Phoenix Choose Today, Friday By Allen Solly, and Louis Philippe SS 13. According to the judges, the catalogues were simple, but had good engagement value, especially the catalogue, Louis Philippe SS 13 Shoe catalogue.
All the catalogues were printed on 285gsm Natural Evolution white board for cover while the text was printed on 145gsm Natural Evolution white paper, except the Phonenix Choose Today catalogue, where 200gsm Natural Evolution White board for inner pages and 230gsm translucent sheet was used for the inner jacket. Apogee X workflow managed the single pass CMYK with online aqueous coated prints.
According to Vishwakala, the Louis Philippe catalogue required hot debossing and board to board pasting. “We had to maintain a certain temperature to attain colour consistency, because the colour of the cover changes when it comes in contact with hot stamping,” explains the company statement.

Creative Repro Company of the Year
Group FMG (Chennai)
Tel: 91-44-3351 1200 / melvin.deepak@groupfmg.com
Group FMG, an arm of TWG Applied Services (India), is the Creative Repro Company of the Year. Entering for the first time, the company sent in four entries – source images for restoration, and cleaned up and restored images. All the images in RGB were converted to CMYK using One Vision workflow, and the clean-up was done using selective masking and creative colour-up.
According to TWG, the images received were in a poor state and needed quite a bit of image restoration work. The repro work produced for final printing in newspapers and magazines, had brief included instructions like – “Please colour up and cut out the top of man’s head as pop-out”, “Cut-out and crop image and create an old torn-paper portrait effect”, to a more complex, “Please resize, sharpen picture, clean up, boost colours and montage on to background image provided. Make it look natural and vibrant. Add the chip images as per brief and complete the front cover.” And the company says it cleared the jobs in the first round of submission.
Drawing attention of the judges was the work done to the image sent by IPC Media for a magazine cover. A jury member who judged the entries, said, the fact that rich colours go deep down the magazine cover in which the image was used, the reworked image had to be powerful to make it immediately noticeable. “The creative repro work was handled well and supports the magazine’s cover.”
Group FMG’s Indian subsidiary, which employs around 300+staff in its ultra-modern 25,000 sq/ft centre, is the biggest office for the group. The UK office has a staff of 100+; and the US-office is manned with a staff strength of over 70. The factfile is impressive. What with 1.1 million images, 10,000 e-books, 528,000 PDFs and as Prakash Gurumoorthy, director (India), pointed out, “0.0003% error rate.”

Digital Printer of the Year
Avantika Printers (New Delhi)
Tel: 91-11-26215580-81 / mnpandey@appl.in
Three on three. Winning for the third time, New Delhi’s Avantika seems to have made the Digital Printer of the Year Award its own, ever since making its debut three Awards ago.
As in the two previous editions, Avantika’s entries this time too caught the eyes of the judges for its use of substrate; for giving the design, executed on Cordenons, Conqueror and Galgo papers, an elegant balance between art (photographic work in one of the entries) and product, which showcases the work.
Match Box produced for customer Mukul Raut, has two parts, one is postcards and other is packaging the postcards into a box. The cards and paper passed on the box were printed on a Canon Imagepress C7010VP colour digital production press, and the press’ capability to emboss was used to give the effect on the side of the box, which was punctuated with screen print and UV lamination process to highlight some part of the work. According to Avantika, they had to work hard on process control for colour consistency, as the company had to match the photographic prints, some of it on silver shiny paper. Avantika produced 100 pieces of the product.
Ace, a hardbound book for Rabbithole, according to Avantika, truly reflects the power and elegance of the tennis star, Maria Sharapova; while the Anantas Brochure for 4 Design, a book, “which has subtle symphony and creativity” has been produced with “flawless print impression that inspires any soul”; The Best of India, a hard bound brochure with a box, for India Brand Equity Foundation, according to Avantika, is “simply the best presentation which depicts the choices of Indian products”.
According to the judges, the entries, which were so impressive, illustrate a clear process, experimentation, strategy and hard work, which yields results, and top honour for the company.
The 24-year old company, has a print production floor dominated by Canon digital press, besides a Konica Minolta C6000, a mono Xerox digital printer for single-colour work, a screen printing facility and a complete facility for post-press and pre-press, which produces an array of ingenious print jobs.
MN Pandey, the pivot around whom the company’s operations revolve, has been a teacher of Mathematics in Ayodhya. His maxims like “digital is the grandson of print – and it is definitely the future” or the four things which he believes can create a great job, “men, machine, implementation of the latest technologies, and above all the vision of the head of the organisation”, portrays the man’s mission and is a perfect fit for his company. According to Pandey, Avantika is doing an excellent job of creating sparkling products for its clients.

Fine Art Printer of the Year
Marvel Graphic Studio (Ahmedabad)
Tel: 91-79-2687 0256 / marvelartgallery@gmail.com
Excelling for the third consecutive time, Ahmedabad-based Marvel Graphic Studio’s printing of artworks for artists, Shanti Dave, Amit Ambalal, Ravindra Salve, had the judges riveted to the prints. “There is no doubt that the originals would have been a wonderful pieces of work, but I also do not think that much has been lost (and perhaps something gained) while reproducing the serigraphy works,” said one of the judges.
While the original works have been done on canvas, Marvel’s Dhanvi Shah, says, “We have used colours in a very different manner. We have stuck to the artistic approach or element that was in the original painting. One can say, we have brought the fine arts into serigraphy.”
While Shah explains the intricacies of all the serigraphy works, he shares one experience about the Shanti Dave work. “The artist, being from the village, has shown the cowdung layered house, which is a tradition in villages. We gave the prints a similar effect, depicting the life lived in a village,” he says. “It’s an important cultural legacy, we wish to carry forward through our prints, our works.”
The other important part about the Dave serigraphy is that it was reproduced from a transparency (TP) slide. From a small copy to the size 14.50x35inch, was a new and challenging experience for Shah. “The work itself was technically sound and marvellously composed. We had to bring in all our expertise, merging it with the artist’s skill into the print.”
The four entries have had print runs in the range of 90 to 125, with tones of colour/screens ranging from 35 to 56, which took more than 35 to 45 days to print.
For the third time in succession, the judges felt that it’s the genuine craftsmanship of Marvel that has made the entries so stunning. And the skills in executing the art, creating the images and tones so stunning, enhances the richness of the prints. “Excellent works.”

Spectrum Scan (Mumbai)

The Innovative Printer category saw a close fight among the contestants, two of whom topped the chart with equal points. Last year’s winner Parksons Graphics and Vasai-based Spectrum Scan were declared winners, for the usability factor and for creating a product that emphasises the “wow” factor.
Parksons Graphics, the Mumbai-based company, which picks up three Awards this year, had a winner in the ACK Media’s Trolly Bag. Parksons, which promotes itself as a solution provider, says, “It’s our duty to understand the pain areas of our clients, and during one of our visit to ACK Media, we stumbled on a problem of theirs.”
According to Parksons, ACK Media wanted to market around 300 titles of their Indian classic titles, mythology, bravehearts, visionary, fables, etc together. They also wanted to add 10 hard case books of comics into this pack. The challenge was: how to pack these and display it in their book stalls?
Parksons fabricated a box using four-ply double wall heavy duty corrugated, 300gsm three-M-duplex board, and printed the titles with illustrations (in four-colour) on the outer side of the box, with its Heidelberg XL 105. All the titles were placed in the box. Since the box was around 45kgs, four castor wheels were fitted to the box to make it mobile. The fabrication of box makes it a multi-purpose items. The lid of the box has been created in such a way that it can be pulled out and used as a handle for the trolley. The box can also be used as a chair and a table to write. “This is not only a solution but a marketing triumph,” says Parksons, because ACK Media could sell a large number of its titles to NRIs.
Spectrum Scan’s The Cadbury thermoformed large-format is a high-impact display item. The back-lit, print and formed backlit signage was designed in-house. The pre-press included colour and graphic correction and pre-distortion to compensate for thermoform distortion. Semi-automatic screen printing machine was used to print the PET G acrylic sheets. In-house thermoforming machine was used to form the shape of the bottle. CMYK colour was used to produce and a special colour was used to compensate for the distortion of colour and day and night effect.
Spectrum Scan recently opened an experience lounge, what it claims is, an unique concept. It is called the Bazaar, a 2,500 sq/ft showroom of POP and POS items. It has also installed an interdeck- six-colour + coater (28inch x 40inch) Roland press and a new custom-made 5 x 10 thermo-forming machine. “This technology has opened up new markets and opportunities and we are now looking at the next exciting investment,” says Amit Shah of Spectrum Scan.
According to the judges, the two ideas by itself would not have made it an award-winner, but the ability to leverage its use beyond display, has taken it to that level. “Innovative products with a purpose,” said one.

Newspaper Printer of the Year
Anandabazar Patrika (Kolkata)
Tel: 91-33-2260 0174 / snehasis.roy@abp.in
Kolkata-based Anandabazar Patrika (ABP) was in the news for the installation of Wifag 370S, a large, modern, high performance web offset press.
It was also in news for the innovation it did with the publication of The Telegraph on the day the IPL 2013 was inaugurated. This special feature was a first for the Indian newspaper publishing, claims ABP.
The standard newsprint for that day’s daily, was jacketed with a Glama transluscent paper, which was printed using a cold web offset process at a speed of 23 copies per second. This innovative jacket daily along with other three publications, which were also the ‘Best in Print’ at Wan-Ifra Asia Media, won ABP the Newspaper Printer of the Year 2013 Award.
The newspaper segment continues to grow in India. With a print run of 4,00,000 copies printed on the new Wifag at 85,000cph, ABP epitomises it. The award entries were counted, packed, and top-sheeted automatically by the Swiss-make Ferag mailroom system. Adobe Acrobat PDFs were pre-flighted using Onevisin Asura and plates were fired using Agfa Arkitex CTP.
The Telegraph was launched on the 7th July, 1982 and in its short life span of 26 years has become the largest circulated English daily in the eastern region published from Kolkata. The success, ABP claims, is because of the constant value-addition it does to its product. The Telegraph introduced an eight-page colour section, Metro, to its edition, which is dedicated to Kolkata and its people. The Telegraph is also published from Guwahati (to cater to the entire north-east), Siliguri (for North Bengal and Sikkim), Jamshedpur, and Ranchi (for Jharkhand).

This is another category which saw a tie. Jayna Packaging and Spectrum Scan sharing the honours.
Jayna Packaging sent in four entries – Kinder Joy Arch display, Old Spice standing unit, Oral B island display and Rubber Band floor standing unit. All the entries were made from 100% recyclable heavy duty corrugated board with five-colour printing.
Explaining the Kinder Joy Arch, Jayna states that the client wanted to make an island display which would carry a stock of around 50kgs and be sturdy enough. The other criteria was that it can be shipped flat and can be assembled in couple of minutes with absolute ease, which was achieved.
The Oral B Island was designed in a way that each of its shelves can take a weight of 5-7kgs easily. “The look of the display is enhanced with 3D Oral B Paste, made from corrugated board, pasted on each of the four sides of the display unit. Again, the display can be shipped flat and its structure design is such that it can be assembled in a couple of minutes and with absolute ease,” states Jayna.
Spectrum Scan sent its big entry Castle Lager thermoform bottle along with three other entries namely Nokia Programmed LED display, and two Babylip FSUs for Garnier.
Castle Lager is an high-impact point of sale item. The back-lit, print and formed product has the ability to display the product along with dispensing arrangement. The Babylip FSUs has been printed on self-adhesive vinyl using HP latex 65500 six-colour wide-format digital press and mounted on the fabricated FSU with sunboard. The POP for Nokia is printed on the Atma screen printing machine, which has been thermoformed for shape and fabricated to form the display with programmed LED lighting.
According to Spectrum, POP has become more sophisticated than ever. “We are pushing the boundaries hard in terms of innovation, use of material and technology in our endeavour to produce products that help our clients meet their targets,” says Amit Shah of Spectrum Scan.
It’s a fact that in their constant battle to attract attention on the retail floorspace, a brand needs innovative point-of-purchase material that allows it to stamp their mark on in-store display. POPs can be small or big, but the key to getting it right is by ensuring one follows it through its store experience. “These entries fit the bill besides having the desired impact,” stated the jury.

This year too, as in the last four years, this category has been awarded to a new print company. Screen Art Enterprises, the Mumbai-based screen printing specialist has followed the like of Bengaluru’s Autographics Digital, Trichy-based Antz Innovation, Hyderabad’s Pragati Offset and last year’s winner, Silverpoint Press of Mumbai, in winning the Award by demonstrating a thoughtful and creative use of screen print processing.
The company’s four Divya Thakur posters, used pre-press techniques to produce the perfectly registered, large-format, three-colour screen printed sheets with special gold finishing. The job was printed and delivered in two days. The company printed 50 copies of each poster using Natural Evolution Ivory 240gsm paper.
What really caught the judges’ attention was not the size but the posters’ ability to pull the viewers in, “making one wonder what this image and poster is all about,” as one of the members put it.

Pragati Offset makes it two out of two in the PUR Book Maker of the Year Award category. Pragati Offset’s submissions of Asian Paints Aspira – Countless Harmony, Berger Silk, Ozz Fest and The Colour of Life 2013 were a cut above the competition and the quality of these entries were unmatched by any other entry according to the judges.
The judges were looking for consistency in quality along with durability, less wrinkling in the backbone and lay-flat quality.
Pragati scored big due to the level of difficulty and precision in execution. The Ozz Fest job consists of different sections, each with different page widths which makes sewing a laborious process. With PUR, a good binding strength and fast turnaround was possible. Asian Paints Aspira had some sections with embossing and some with debossing, due to which conventional sewing was ruled out. And as catalogues tend to be used more often, it is necessary to provide excellent binding strength, which is why PUR was used instead of hotmelt binding.

Reports And Accounts Printer of the Year
Parksons Graphics (Mumbai)

Last year, Parksons Graphics shared the Reports and Accounts Printer of the Year Award with CDC Printers. This time around they have done better to pip other contestants, sending in four quality sets of annual reports printed for JK Cement, J&K Bank, Hindustan National Glass & Industries, and Strides Arcolabs.
Annual reports are very important to all companies, because it holds the promise of the future and where the companies hope to be. The written word and the theme of the report are crucial.
Parksons used 250gsm APP art card, 170gsm APP gloss art paper, 128gsm Emote Bright White, and 105gsm Karess Imprint White for the JK Cement – Deluxe Annual Report. The report was printed on the Heidelberg CD74 and CD102 presses, using shimmer offset with Colourlogic software. Finishing was provided using lasercut.
According to Parksons, the client brief was, “striking colour with typography, soft bound cover, and laser-cut letters”. The end-paper was heated with shimmer offset by using Colorlogic software. While the annual report speaks about facts and figures, Parksons gave this importance by highlighting the typography illustrations and striking colours instead of glossy pictures.
For the J&K Bank annual report, which Parksons has been producing for the last five years, they did a blind embossing and raised printing on the cover with abrasive UV, pasting a small booklet on the inner cover. This year’s design did not focus on visuals but on the type, “which made it more challenging,” according to Parksons. “With every year, it’s becoming more challenging to surpass the expectation of the client,” the company says.
For the Hindustan National Glass Industries’ annual report it used thermography on the cover while Strides Arcolab’s annual report had the inner pages gathered, section-sewn, cover overdrawn and inserted into a seal king bag.
Parksons have, by their print work, given the written words and the theme the treatment, that according to one judge, “the print jobs has not only turned the annual reports into a marketing piece, but also one that captures the corporate feel, look and style”.
