Harsha Paruchuri of Hyderabad-based Pragati Offset, says the PUR system eliminates the need for sewing the books, which helps in good time saving.
Describe your company?
Pragati Offset is the commercial offset division of Pragati Group. This unit produces commercial job which includes brochures, catalogues, profiles, coffee table books, annual reports, tabletop and wall calendars etc.
What does the system do?
The PUR system replaces the hotmelt in the perfect binding process. The system enables strong binding of books as compared to the conventional EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) hotmelts.
Why did you choose this particular system?
The superior bonding of PUR over hotmelt is well known. Even for difficult substrates for such as coated, high thickness, heavy ink in binding gutter, the bonding is very good. The page pull strength of a PUR bound book is more than 2.5 times that of a standard perfect bound book using EVA adhesive. Books bound with PUR adhesive simply will not fall apart, even under heavy usage in the most demanding conditions.
Did you look at any other similar system?
No, we went with the Welbound Worldwide and Robatech India’s solution as they’re reliable partners.
Why did you make the purchase?
It’s been something that we’ve had on our ‘to do’ list for some time. We wanted to use PUR for perfect binding in order to get the best results.
What features do you particularly like?
Simple – the much better bonding. And the ability to now perfect bind jobs which had to be side-pasted/stapled earlier in order to give the requisite strength.
Is there anything you wish it had that it doesn’t?
PUR has to cure by taking up moisture from the air/paper, and this is a slightly lengthy process. Also, if the system is not expected to be used for a few days or more, then the glue has to be flushed from the hose and nozzles which does take some time and wastes some glue.
How fast is it?
Its the same as regular hotmelt perfect binding – as the same machine is being used... However, it does eliminate the need for sewing the books, so there is a good time saving.
What’s the quality like?
Great - the bonding strength is unbelievable - two people pulling on two sides of a book couldn’t break the bond. The paper will tear before the PUR bond lets go!
How reliable is it?
Been quite reliable in the few weeks we’ve used it!
How easy is it to use?
Quite easy to use. However, proper maintenance is required, such as the flushing, etc as mentioned above.
How much time or money has it saved?
Saves quite a bit of time considering removal of the sewing operation. The glue does cost more, even considering the much lower glue layer required as compared to hotmelt. But quality and time are something that are worth the money.
Would you say that it offers value for money?
Yes.
Were there any difficulties experienced during the installation or after?
Our Kolbus RatioBinder had to be prepared for the PUR attachment which took some time and effort.
What about the pre- and after-sales service?
Great service and support from Suresh and team from Welbound and Jijesh from Robatech and also Sandeep from Henkel.
Who do you think the system is right for?
Anyone who handles books with heavy inks and/or coatings in the binding spine.
